     @sun @joncruz I don't but I also don't feel like Microsoft joined the open-source movement at all.
     At least not more than Oracle did (and I was an OpenSolaris user).

     @lanodan I'm pretty sure he wanted to talk about MS BASIC as a pioneering accomplishment. It used one of the first emulators, running on DEC-10.

     SCO was arguably initially attacking GNU, but were too afraid to name it, then later moved onto Linux, as they figured that a project not dedicated to freedom would have copied at least some Unix code, but Linux didn't either.

     Please do not openwash history.
     
     The "open source" movement was started in 1998 - rather, the concept of freely sharing software was a thing for 40+ years (later defined by the free software definition in 1986 (around 1990 it was realized that the previously thought exceedingly obvious freedom to run the program needed to be explicitly declared, so it was added as freedom 0) and much later misdefined as "open source", which confuses people into thinking that the only important thing is that the source code is publicly available).

     MS BASIC wasn't a pioneering accomplishment, since as far as I am aware, better BASIC implementations at the time existed.
     
     What MS BASIC accomplished was widespread usage due to sharing of copies, but of course Bill Gates wrote up a letter *complaining* about that, as he didn't receive a payment for every copy made, despite how a copy should have at least been provided to a University for them to share, in exchange for the expensive computer time he used while unauthorized (he was pretending to be a student with a friend at that University, so he could use computer time without having to pay).
