The "open source" movement was started in 1998 - rather, the concept of freely sharing software was a thing for 40+ years (later defined by the free software definition in 1986 (around 1990 it was realized that the previously thought exceedingly obvious freedom to run the program needed to be explicitly declared, so it was added as freedom 0) and much later misdefined as "open source", which confuses people into thinking that the only important thing is that the source code is publicly available).
