      @vriska @why we used to call them hack n slashes but then Metroid other m released and it was a hack n slash but you shoot so there's no hacking or slashing so they called them action games but then uncharted came out and is an action movie game so people that used to call those games action games started calling them 'character action' games but that name makes no sense

      @vriska @triodug but the entire genre consists of games made by looking glass studios and games inspired by those games. imsim fags will argue that other RPGs made before Ultima Underworld are not imsims. meanwhile the literal definition is so vague that nearly any game could be considered an imsim.
      ive seen people unironically argue that the only "true imsims" are games that contain the same easter egg that every LGS game had. that's like saying a shooter isn't an FPS because it doesn't have a dopefish in it, that's how specific this fake-ass genre is

      @hj @triodug @vriska They did call them doom-clones when the games just cloned doom. It's a derogatory term that implies the game offers nothing that isn't already in doom. Once the FPS genre diversified the genre became more generic (hey those words are similar isn't that crazy its almost like genre means generic which means not specific to one thing).
      Souls-likes, Thief-likes, and DMC-likes never diversified. They made clones and sequels and derivatives but always felt identical to their core entry. Doom 2016 took from hundreds of other games that released in the 20 years since Doom 2 and made a unique FPS out of it. Dishonored just made Thief out of Bioshock, which was already a watered down System Shock 2.
