Alex Gleason (alex@gleasonator.com)'s status on Wednesday, 26-Oct-2022 03:10:09 JST Alex Gleason The custom emoji implementation in Pleroma is so bad (for admins). I shouldn't have to restart the server just to add some emoji! -

Alex Gleason (alex@gleasonator.com)'s status on Wednesday, 26-Oct-2022 03:17:14 JST Alex Gleason I described the problems with it here, mainly that it uses the filesystem as a database making it really slow: https://gitlab.com/soapbox-pub/soapbox/-/issues/1132#note_1148468923
Also, the idea of "packs" being required is fucked up. Emojis are a global namespace... god please just let me throw an emoji on the server without thinking so hard. -

Wang Master 5000 (look@muh.wang)'s status on Wednesday, 26-Oct-2022 03:27:38 JST Wang Master 5000 I never understood the concept of emoji packs. How do you categorize emojis into packs? Like, "racist emojis pack"? And what's the benefit? In conversation permalink -

Alex Gleason (alex@gleasonator.com)'s status on Wednesday, 26-Oct-2022 03:27:38 JST Alex Gleason In theory it's supposed to be like how Unicode actually is - emojis are categorized, eg "Nature". Packs also make them more easily shareable.
But it really shouldn't serve as the basis for custom emojis. Emojis are a global bucket, and categorization into "packs" should be an optional thing on top of that.In conversation permalink Attachments

(mint@ryona.agency)'s status on Wednesday, 26-Oct-2022 03:28:14 JST @alex Apparently, packs are meant to be shared, but I never cared to try that. Other than that, separating them into packs does make sense from the same UX standpoint as it allows clients to have separate tabs for different emojis with specific theme. Not much of a problem when you can just make a pack named unsorted/stuff/whatever and throw there all emojis not worth making separate pack for. In conversation permalink Alex Gleason likes this. -
