I don't really consider the "dark fediverse" to be intrinsically rightwing, so much as it is a medium through which you are expected to moderate your own experience on the fediverse without relying on your instance admin to filter out the unsavoury elements for you.
@Hoss@shitpost.cloud is a great example of someone who can post about numerous topics of interest one moment and then make an antisemitic remark the next. Such is the duality of the fediverse. It is ultimately left to your discretion with whom you associate with and adjust accordingly. Another example I can give is of the thriving queer community on the 'alt fedi' that isn't part of the Mastosphere. They've probably been thrown every insult under the sun, yet they persist nonetheless. That is because they have chosen to curate their experience on the fediverse by distancing themselves from problematic people and instances while federating with those that align with their shared hobbies and interests. That is how you'll end up with people that selectively interact with friends and acquaintances from the 'alt fedi' while avoiding most of the egregious instances known for spewing nothing but revilement and vitriol.
The Mastosphere on the other hand is known for their sweeping fediblocks on all manner of instances for anything remotely offensive to the point of being libel. The result is a pre-Musk Twitteresque echo chamber that is inorganically sanitary. Any 'wrong' opinions, political or otherwise may result in your account being marked to have reduced visibility. This includes removal from Mastodon discovery and your posts being restricted to unlisted only, which previously happened to me in one such instance. The way that people migrated over from Twitter and have used Mastodon as a drop-in replacement for Twitter is not something that a lot of people in the fediverse at large appreciate, nor are their attempts at trying to police the fediverse through a unified blocklist. That is the reason you'll often find people like myself on the 'alt fedi' as our side of the iron curtain affords a greater degree of freedom in the range of our speech and expression.
I kinda disagree with you there, I believe they are bad because people just import them blindly, sometimes they are abused and people end up with them because someone is spiteful. We are in some blocklists flagged as racists and have you ever seen me being racist? The one post I saw with a racial slur I had removed. That's what makes them bad.
The real reason he catches the same defeds as us chuds is because he's talking with the untouchables. #Fediblock isn't just about curating what they see on their end, it's about making sure nobody else talks with people the Mastodon hivemind has deemed persona non grata as well. Can't have people making their own instances and going off the plantation to talk with the enemy or even just see what they're posting, so in order to enforce ideological purity "not using the blocklist" is one of the top reasons to be put on the blocklist yourself.
>We are in some blocklists flagged as racists and have you ever seen me being racist? Most of the reasons are made up anyway. Probably the reason why your instance is on some blocklists is that you federate with instances like SPC/SPW, Asbestos cafe,... Racism is just a blanket word for a "valid" reason.
the fun thing is they tell people to create their own instance if they don't like their policies but then will block that newly created instance for having different moderation policy
