Easter, otherwise known as the week long Roman festivities for The Great Mother Goddess Cybele and her consort/child Attis.

Attis who died after self castrating and was after severals days ressurected as an eternal beauty / woman. The festivities were the roman spring equinox, with Attis's own death to symbolize the death of fruits in winter to only reappear in spring.

A pine tree would be felled and taken and erected in front of the Temple of Cybele with its branches decorated with wreaths of violets.

The ceremonies proper would begin Starting with the Dies Sanguinius -
:blood: The Day of Blood :blood: where many followers of the religion, the Galli would flagellate themselves until they bled and some self castrating in order to join their ranks - and become women-like in honour of Attis.

Then the Dies Hilaria - The Day of Joy to celebrate the ressurection of Attis - an act of kindness from Cybele (Gaia/Mother Earth)

Then a day of rest, then a day of washing, and finally a procession and ceremony at the Vatican Sanctuary.

And yes the eggs of Easter are definitely Attis's testes.

@drunkenmadman im intrigued as to what your skeptical conclusion is there. Like whats the logical end game your envisaging here if your skeptical hunch is right that there arent pine trees in the mediterranean?

@siege are pine trees actually endemic to Italy? I’m… skeptical

@drunkenmadman in terms of the end fo the ice age would you not think it would be more likely to go the opposite direction?

@siege there’s no end game, I’ve just lived around a bunch of places with pine trees and none of them have had Mediterranean climates.

@siege I mean, totally 100% fine if the pine thing came from, let’s say, scandinavia.

There’s a shedload of English that came from Norse immigration, which has Germanic roots, with a bunch of latin melded into it… but l guess if pines aren’t endemic to the Italian peninsula, then we’ve got cultural migration.

@drunkenmadman It took me less than 10 seconds to search the Internet and find out about stone pines. It took you much longer to write multiple responses questioning a fact that you could have easily checked yourself

@boomfish @siege well fuck me dead. Ok. My brain is yelling at me that it’s not a pine but Wikipedia - and you - are right.

Thank you for correcting me. I genuinely appreciate it.

@drunkenmadman @boomfish if it helps makes things more confusing; the romans and greeks illustrated it using something akin to the stone pine shape, but as an originally anatolian religion and as it mentions Attis going up a mountain before the castratrion its likely it would have been some sort of black pine in a shape that may seem more familiar.

Sure, I’m good with that. Maybe my UK upbringing and my shitty google cookies have fucked me over here.
