Me: looking for diphenhydramine (benadryl) in a uk drug store
Me: tries the pharmacy counter, sees topical diphenhydramine in the allergy section
    Pharmacist: Can I help you?
Me: I want the pill form of that medication.
Pharmacist: We have loratadine and cetirizine pills, but no diphenhydramine pills.
Me: Perhaps you sell it as a sleep aid?
Pharmacist: side-eyes me but looks, and finds it
Pharmacist: This is a sleep aid, not an allergy medication, are you going to use it as a sleep aid?
    Me: ...yes.
Pharmacist: rolls their eyes and sells it to me

Meanwhile, pseudoephedrine isn't behind the counter.

Also, the UK has codeine in 12.8mg tablets either with 200mg ibuprofen or 500mg paracetamol (aka acetaminophen) at the pharmacy counter.

@geoffl I checked the ingredients, it was actual pseudophedrine.

@ryanc Pseudoephedrine should be behind the pharmacist's side of the counter in the UK. Don't be fooled by the other Sudofed that contains no pseudoephedrine.

50mg Sleepeaze are normally the most cost effective high street DPH.

@xabean They also sell paracetamol like that. I do appreciate the "and now I don't have to worry about running out of this until it expires" aspect.

In Australia (and presumably the UK) diphenhydramine is referred to as a first generation antihistamine. It's been largely replaced by those other ones like cetirizine.

Yeah, diphenhydramine is available as a sleep aid because of the drowsiness side effect.

@QuatermassTools Co-codamol is 8mg codeine/500mg paracetamol, so I can't take enough for it to be useful.

FWIW I do take loratadine for allergies.

I wanted the diphenhydramine to both act as an antihistamine and a sedative for "marathon" electrolysis sessions. Loratadine didn't help at all, so I'm planning to try diphenhydramine next time.

Hair removal via heat-based electrolysis (thermolysis) works by using a very thin RF probe that slides into the skin and destroys hair follicles at the root.

It bloody hurts, and more hair can be removed if I'm not squirming, so... I medicate myself.

@gsuberland I mean, generally that does seem like a bad idea, but they allow me tolerate a lot of pain, and I don't otherwise find the effects appealing in any way.

@ryanc yeah that one is not ideal. I got some from the pharmacist for post dental surgery recovery and they gave me about 5x as many tablets as I needed. really irresponsible approach imo.

@geoffl I can't have it combined with paracetamol because I need to take other medications with it that have paracetamol. I'll just buy a bottle with enough diphenhydramine to kill an entire circus worth of elephants the next time I'm in the US.

@ryanc That is surprising. I'm guessing it's been put out in place of the phenylephrine version by mistake. If you have trouble finding DPH in future you can also look out for Panadol Night. That will be with the OTC painkillers and is a combination of paracetamol (acetaminophen) 500mg and DPH 25mg. Obviously not for anyone sensitive to paracetamol though.
