How it started: "This change has zero effect on the Redis core license, which is and will always be licensed under the 3-Clause-BSD."

How it's going: "Beginning today, all future versions of Redis will be released with source-available licenses. Starting with Redis 7.4, Redis will be dual-licensed under the Redis Source Available License (RSALv2) and Server Side Public License (SSPLv1)."

I'm glad that the page with all the historical sponsors of Redis will live on in the git repository for redis.io.

Because it's been deleted from the live site.

@sageofredondo @Ric MPL was not sufficient friction to prevent Hashicorp's license change... There are believed to be MPL v2 contributions that haven't been "written out" of the code base that were pre-CLA.

@msw @Ric going to be asking about this tomorrow at Red Hat. My opinion is we need to start using strong copyleft licenses. MPL v2 with an option to relicense to (L)GPL v2 or higher at the least.

@msw A similar thing happened with Sentry (former employer) leaning into the Business Source License.

All I can really say is that SaaS and Open Source do not always lead to a happy outcome. Things got really gross there over time, even the product is a kludge covered in "upgrade to enterprise to use this!" features.

Wow, what an overwhelming community response in this PR. It is not a surprise when something like #Redis has become so loved by its community. There’s a clear sentiment that with this change it has been taken away.

I encourage folks to support #OpenSource maintainers who were doing the hard work as individuals. They didn’t ask for any of this disruption in their lives. They exist and their efforts matter.

@curtosis @msw Sounds far-fetched, but that doesn't matter. Amazon and IBM won't touch the SSPL with a ten-foot pole, which is the purpose of the license. The purpose achieved, the details are moot.

There were multiple forks already, and at least two formed in response to the company's actions. Nobody has a reason to stay on Redis Redis unless they want to, e.g. if they want to pay Redis for support.

@msw IANAL but it strikes me as entirely plausible that Redis is promissorily estopped from enforcing the new license against anyone who made investments in reliance on that statement.

Not great for the small fish, but they’d be nuts to go after an IBM or Amazon.
