Scott Williams ๐ง (vwbusguy@mastodon.online)'s status on Saturday, 30-Mar-2024 00:40:33 JST Scott Williams ๐ง @jbowen @mattdm Matt is right though. You're holding Red Hat to a higher standard than Mongo, Elastic, Hashicorp, and Redis. Comparing the RHEL change to what Hashicorp, Redis, etc did is a false equivalency. I'm saying this as someone who was critical of all of these things.

Check it out:

Scott Williams ๐ง (vwbusguy@mastodon.online)'s status on Saturday, 23-Mar-2024 13:02:32 JST Scott Williams ๐ง I'm not saying you shouldn't use these licenses or contribute code to permissive license projects. I use permissive and copy-left licenses, depending on the situation. In any case, you should know what you are granting.
Redis did say that they would never relicense core from BSD, and I'm sure many contributors trusted their word in his faith. I am not a lawyer and have no idea how binding corporate blog posts are, but the BSD license itself allows them to do this.

Scott Williams ๐ง (vwbusguy@mastodon.online)'s status on Saturday, 23-Mar-2024 13:02:32 JST Scott Williams ๐ง A lot of people in the Redis community are now learning about the difference between permissive and copy-left licenses.
If you contribute code licensed with MIT or BSD, anyone can use that code in proprietary software, never release the source or modifications to it, and the only thing they owe you is publishing the BSD license text notice somewhere with the software. You still get attribution, but redis can absolutely legally do this.

Scott Williams ๐ง (vwbusguy@mastodon.online)'s status on Saturday, 23-Mar-2024 13:02:31 JST Scott Williams ๐ง Redis did not need a CLA to do it either. This is a difference from Hashicorp, MongoDB, etc, that utilized a CLA to relicense a copy-left license. The BSD license does not require an author reattribution agreement.
Further, it's entirely possible to relicense BSD to GPL under the same mechanism, as redict has now done, regardless of whether the contributors to redis would agree to such a thing if you asked them now.

"By embracing source-available licenses, Redis aims to foster a more inclusive and sustainable ecosystem that encourages collaboration and innovation. These licenses ensure that developers have access to the latest Redis technologies while also preserving the integrity of the open-source community."

This helps offset her bodily recovery and let's her focus on nursing and resting. Ditto for laundry and cooking. This time, I offered our older two kids a quarter for every wet diaper and a dollar for every dirty one they wilfully change.

IOW, I still want #Firefish, #Pixelfed, etc to look and feel like they natively do on the server, but have a common aggregated launching point for interactions.
