During long and slow cardio workouts, I play turn-based squad tactics games on my #SteamDeck. I loved and finished Marvel's #MidnightSuns, and #Warhammer40k Mechanicus was a fun little squash match. So I thought I'd try #XCom2 next and, while I love the detail, it probably isn't for me. It's great, but the missions only feel playable *after* restarting them 3 times to figure out what they're all about. That's not the kind of flow I find manageable. I'd love to find other titles to try.

@roadriverrail I think it's Playable, not Verified, but check out Vigilantes.

@feezus Thanks for the rec! Playable is often fine. XCOM 2 isn't Verified but some decent community controller mappings make it workable. I'm just getting weary of level design where the goals aren't shown in time to adapt to them. Playing a mission 2-3 times just to know what it's about is gaming for some people but not for me.

@feezus "Unforgiving" doesn't bother me and I don't mind being bad at things. I've just had a few experiences where the standard was "know the script before you start". And that's fine gaming for someone who's after "master the game as a game" kind of stuff. But this is more "keep my mind occupied so I forget I'm doing useless physical labor for an hour" needs. 😅

@roadriverrail XCOM is famously unforgiving. It's not for everyone. I like it, but I am very bad at it 😂

@pasty oh, that's a setting? That would help some. And I think the mission that got me asking this is a story mission and requires you to just happen to know and be ready to go from "keep a defensible position" to "don't die while you run like hell", with only a 1-2 turn zone of opportunity to act.

@roadriverrail XCOM 2 benefits greatly from you using the setting to double level timers

eventually you figure out that every level is one of a few types and how the enemy packs are predictable in some ways and then you can manage the levels a lot faster

@roadriverrail How is your Steam Deck experience overall? I pre-ordered one and have had it since the release but I hardly use it. It's probably the type of games I find myself playing these days (Talisman, Civilization, Catan...)

@mcmcgreevy It's basically everything I could want it to be. I haven't turned my Switch on since I got it. This is doubly-so because I bought the cradle for hooking it up to the TV. On the TV, I've played Dead Cells a ton and just keep loving it. On portable, both Puck and I fell in love with Marvel's Midnight Suns and spent lots of time bonding over it. You might enjoy that one. It's basically a strategy card game, but beautiful and with some well-written character drama.

@rrrobbed if you happen to get a feel for its vibe after a couple hours with it, do let me know!

@roadriverrail I just started Phoenix Point, feels very much like Xcom 2, can’t say yet if it fixes your complaints about that game, which I agree with.
