It's crazy how much this happens.

I agree completely about the frustration of e-scooters blocking access for pedestrians and cyclists — especially for people with disabilities who will have difficulty navigating around them, but not only for them. It pisses me off.Per the cartoon in the OP, next time I see that, I’m going to take a step back and consider all the space set aside for cars in the same light.

Ned Yeung (ned@mstdn.ca)'s status on Friday, 15-Mar-2024 04:19:46 JST Ned Yeung @artemis Just how effective it will be remains to be seen as it was only done late in the season, but I already saw a very notable difference in that short period, with far fewer scooters on the paths. Next season we'll get a better view of the effectiveness of the fines.

Ned Yeung (ned@mstdn.ca)'s status on Friday, 15-Mar-2024 04:19:51 JST Ned Yeung @artemis This is exactly what they've done in my city, and as such the scooter share industry is staying as opposed to getting wiped out of other cities. Government regulation and control of private industry is important in this era of Capitalist exploitation and greed. You'll see every scooter share in the city now has signs on every scooter warning about illegal parking, and this ONLY happened after the City set up fines for the companies renting them out. That's how it's done, like you said.

I am 100% convinced that if these companies were fined enough for their users doing this, they would be motivated enough to find a solution to prevent or at least very strongly discourage it.If it cost them money, they might fix it, but as is these scooters might not be nearly as big a problem as cars, but they are a problem.

I'd be a lot happier if scooter rental companies took responsibility for the fact that their scooters are constantly left blocking paths, causing obstacles for disabled folks. Blind people, wheelchair users, etc. all have their ability to move freely and safely impeded by these things. When I lived in a downtown neighborhood, most mornings while walking my dog I would have to move one or more scooters blocking the sidewalk so that other folks would hopefully be able to USE the sidewalks

If a single scooter can make the street inaccessible for a person in a wheelchair, isn’t it because of how little space was left for the wheelchair before the scooter even arrived on the scene? -
