Largely agree with @jdp23 I would quibble with the claim that “big fedi” model turns local fedi servers into “dumb pipes” whereas bluesky PDS servers *really are that* to my mind and show the difference.
PDS admins seem to do little more than keep the lights on and (maybe) remove some illegal conent (maybe if I understand it right) or users (maybe, if I understand it right)…
Mastodon admins - in both big fedi and little fedi models) set all the house rules… (for good or ill)….

@tchambers Agreed that it's more explicit in the Bluesky model, but Evan really did say that in the "big fedi" view "the account server may set some parameters around content or software usage, but otherwise it’s mostly a dumb pipe".

True that, he did. Think that is a weak or exaggerated bit from his essay that didn’t seem as strong as the other parts…. “ As Evan said, “Not everyone who agrees with one or a few of these agrees with them all…” so count me in that camp for that bit.

@tchambers Fair enough! That's why I say "Evan's description of the "big fedi" view". I don't really like the big/small fedi framing-- I think a fedi that more actively tries to keep Nazis / terfs / harassers off will be *bigger* long-term than one that says "More people is good" -- and a lot of stuff like "fedi will be different five years from now" applies to everybody. But it's certainly a useful (albeit imperfect) description of the "big fedi" viewpoint.
