@baldur 'LLMs will give me some code without telling me inconvenient truths without asking me about edge conditions or definitions I don't care about' is the actual story here.

@baldur The people who are convinced LLMs replace developers are the same people who always get mad when I ask questions like 'what would you like the system to do if two people share a phone number' or 'okay, what's the definition of Person Is Vaccinated - does country of vaccination matter, does vaccination brand matter?' or 'do you know that you can't extrapolate country of legal residence from dialing prefix? I'm happy to write it but I want to make sure you know that.'

That feeling when you have a look at Linkedin and see a former boss write about how LLMs mean the end of coding and programming as a job. That now the only thing needed to get working software is to describe clearly what you want, something they were always manifestly incapable of doing

      😑

Ah, so our jobs are safe is what I'm hearing. 😂

The LLM prompt is the worst #programming language ever invented, because it has no guarantees whatsoever. Literally all behavior is undefined behavior.

@argv_minus_one @baldur Ooh, let's code in English! A language that can't even clearly communicate when two people are agreeing with each other.

@sullybiker @baldur I think for certain classes of applications this is 100% going to be doable. They will not be novel or groundbreaking applications, but think of it like the "Dreamweaver for even bigger Dummies".

"Make me an iOS app with a search field for movies and use IMDB's API to return results in the format of cards that you swipe" -- done. It may not be great, but it can work.

This is such an oversimplification. But honestly, I root for these types of wannabe techbros. I long for the day when I will read the headlines of some companies utterly failing with this strategy. I will be laughing so hard! Sad part is, this "learn the hard way" is imminent.

@baldur "The end of coding" just means that all the programmers that may get fired today will soon be re-hired as consultants in order to sort out the AI-generated trash fire.

No, I haven't seen such videos. The person who was driving the whole proces, was he by any chance a programmer?
I mean, one thing is an LLM in the hands of the professional, the other thing is to hope that analyst or product owner can prompt LLM to write software for them, white they have no clue about generated code.

@WindOfChange @sullybiker @baldur I dunno man, have you actually seen a video of someone using ChatGPT to write an entire iPhone app before? I've seen several, it's crazy.

🖐️ The End of Coding (euphoric, liberating, egalitarian)

👉 The End of Coding (apocalyptic, claustrophobic, stratifying)

@baldur This has happened before and will happen again. People that think that the hard part of coding is putting non-sense letters together instead of providing a detailed description on how to do something will be amused by the newer technology that writes/generates/uses blocks of non-sense letters good enough for some simple cases.
