Automattic is planning to sign a deal to sell #Tumblr and #WordPress data to train AI tools. https://www.theverge.com/2024/2/27/24084884/tumblr-midjourney-openai-training-data-deal-report

After Matt's transphobic tirade fresh in everyone's minds, this is a cue to get off Tumblr and hosted WordPress ASAP, but I'll wait and see if it also applies to WordPress.org self-hosting service as well before getting off there as well.

    Yikes!!

It also gives the vital importance of owning your own content via #selfhosting and the works.

Today would be a good place to start that journey.

@joeo10 It cannot legally apply to self hosting, as they have no legal access to your data.

@seindal They still own the software so who knows if they plan on implementing it as well. Hence why I said "wait and see".

@joeo10 Even if they did own the software, which they don't, and could change it without being seen, which they can't, it would still be illegal for them to copy other people's data without their consent.

@seindal Many companies get away with these moves even if they're illegal because many governments outside of the EU (going to use the United States as a prime example of this) continue to fail to implement privacy laws in the digital era.

(Not so) Fun Fact: just 23% of Americans know that the US has failed to pass a baseline privacy law for the internet era. https://www.techdirt.com/2023/08/25/just-23-of-americans-know-the-u-s-has-failed-to-pass-an-internet-era-privacy-law/

@joeo10 The software is open source, so they don't own it.

I use it, I've contributed tiny bits, and I haven't paid anybody anything, or signed any agreements.

At most, they own the brand.

"This firehose appears to be distinct from any direct data sharing deal with Midjourney and OpenAI, in part because the documentation makes clear that data being sold via this firehose is not limited only to posts on WordPress.com, but also can include posts on self-hosted WordPress.org websites that use Jetpack, a wildly popular plugin that millions of sites use and that users are encouraged to install when setting up a WordPress site." https://www.404media.co/wordpress-firehose-allows-ai-companies-to-buy-access-to-a-million-posts-a-day/

@techaddressed Or better yet, don't use WordPress at all. They (Automattic) have killed a lot of trust and their reputation is going to take a massive hit here.
