@Vril_Oreilly @Elliptica @a7 @Royper I looked into buying a CRT TV to play old games on.

I ultimately decided against it because I didn't want to have to move a heavy piece of shit used only for one thing that I could emulate on a LCD monitor with whatever effects in the emulator to make it look like a CRT anyway.

it ain't worth it. I don't miss the fumes or the whine of old CRTs either.

@Vril_Oreilly @a7 @Elliptica @Royper @lichelordgodfrey I wish SED tech has taken off. This is from 2007. They'd probably be close to modern thickness today, but there's some physical limitations from how they're manufactured and function.

@BowsacNoodle @Vril_Oreilly @Elliptica @a7 @Royper I remember there being a smell that was more noticeable in a room full of CRTs, like at school.

There's still a smell of like ozone in a room full of computers, but less without the bulky monitors.

I am probably misattributing that to CRTs and it was probably just it being a room full of computers, tbh.

Still not worth it eitherway, imo.

        Surface-conduction electron-emitter display
A surface-conduction electron-emitter display (SED) was a display technology for flat panel displays developed by a number of companies. SEDs used nanoscopic-scale electron emitters to energize colored phosphors and produce an image. In a general sense, a SED consists of a matrix of tiny cathode-ray tubes, each "tube" forming a single sub-pixel on the screen, grouped in threes to form red-green-blue (RGB) pixels. SEDs combine the advantages of CRTs, namely their high contrast ratios, wide viewing angles, and very fast response times, with the packaging advantages of LCD and other flat panel displays. After considerable time and effort in the early and mid-2000s, SED efforts started winding down in 2009 as LCD became the dominant technology. In August 2010, Canon announced they were shutting down their joint effort to develop SEDs commercially, signaling the end of development efforts. SEDs were closely related to another developing display technology, the field emission display, or FED, differing primarily in the details of the electron emitters. Sony, the main backer of FED, has similarly backed off from their development efforts. ...

@Vril_Oreilly @BowsacNoodle @a7 @Elliptica @Royper @lichelordgodfrey A phone sounds weird. Half the reason why I got an ereader was for the dimensions of a small book. Making that even smaller would be terrible

On the other hand, if the tradeoff is a much faster refresh time, I actually could consider swapping over to one

@Vril_Oreilly @a7 @Elliptica @Royper @lichelordgodfrey This is super cool, but I think the next rev will be a lot better. First thing I look for is battery life in an e-reader.
      >[one reviewer said] when just reading, with the backlight set at 30%, the battery was dropping at 8% per hour, which results in a total reading time of about 12 hours. This would make it about the same as an iPad Mini, but the Mini is a much more speedy and capable device.
This is a cool piece of tech and refined would be even better. Take away the camera, for example.
