Honestly a 1 or 2 (max 4) emoji checksum for npubs would be fun and potentially genuinely useful. (Extremely quick, visual validation that you’re referring to the right Alex Gleason and not one of an infinite number of possible imposters)

I don’t know why you’d encode the whole pubkey like that (other than for the lulz)

@tyler This doesn't hinder the randomness or cryptographic protection at all. The private key is generated in binary with a secure function and then encoded to base256 as emojis. It's simply an encoding of an already securely generated key.

I spent a lot more time thinking about this than I should have.

You could be right, since there are a lot of emojis, only 32 'digits' would probably be fine.

@alex @ademan Along the lines of using emoji for simple checksums, the Tor Browser has "Bridge-moji" for easily checking that the correct bridge is enabled (example on https://blog.torproject.org/new-release-tor-browser-115/ )

@alex only as a checksum, not as something which has to be copy/pasted or typed out, since that isn't reliable.
You could use both emoji and ascii and buttom to switch them, or automatically translate between the two, or keep emoji as a display, only revealing the ascii when it needs to be copied or entered somewhere.
I really like the idea though, there is a lot of research that shows that humans are much better at seeing small details in human expressions than anything else.

@alex easier to recognize parts of an emoji key at a glance, but I'm not sure how useful this is in practice. (I like the Telegram emoji secure connection verification thingy, but that's much much shorter)
