A recent interaction on the fediverse:

"This term makes no sense to me. Does anyone know the history and why it is used? Don't explain why you think it makes sense"

Me: "This is the history. Its common and established usage across many fields. Why don't you think it makes sense?"

"I mean it when I said don't explain why you think it makes sense"

So I told them that I answered their question, but had no time for miserable cunts, and blocked and eradicated all trace of them from my own server's database, because I can do that.

Fucksake though. Some of the stereotypes here are true.

    Do fucking better.

Literally ask a question, inviting answers with elaboration, then have a right fucking go at people for doing just that. Wanker.

@goatsarah Um… I disagree with your paraphrasing of the answer you gave though. To my eyes at least, you went: "This is the history. This is why it makes sense."

And their response was along the lines of: "Thanks for the history. I meant it when I asked people not to explain why they think it makes sense today though."

Given the sheer volume of responses the OP gets from Reply Guys when they ask questions like that, I can understand why they might reply to you that way. Maybe you overreacted?

@holsta No, that’s fair. The Piers guy underneath you gets fed to the memory hole tho.

@goatsarah It seems to be overzealous "Reply Guy" defense, especially among people who had a huge following on Twitter.

Often I start to type a response and then I decide, fuck it, it's not worth dealing with the possible fallout of trying to help non-mutuals. Too much room for misunderstandings.

Risking it all with this toot, though!

@pdcawley Btw, you can reply to this if you want, but like the miserable cunt who prompted this in the first place, you’re going in the memory hole, so it won’t get seen. Toodles.

@holsta I think what irked me the most here is that the person in question was actively soliciting responses, and then just being a random wanker when given them.

Which, frankly, just struck me as really rude.

@goatsarah Yeah, I follow that person for their articles but I don't engage. I could just switch back to their RSS feed.

The thing about the reputation that the Fediverse has for being full of "people like that" is that if you comment on it, they turn up.

Even when it's brutally obvious you're going to server block them for it. They can't seem to help themselves.

This is one of the nicest features here: with minimal effort, the tedious takes itself out.

      Here's a good one:

"There are legitimate ways to conceptualise power dynamics which do not centre whatever US-specific racial category Americans have decided you belong to"

As Tom Lehrer said, they still go for peanuts when coated with cyanide...

@goatsarah Reminds me of an old explanation of the term “trolling” as in “trolling for fish” but “trolling for newbies”.

I hope you get a bountiful catch and a full blocklist!
