@thomasfuchs The indicator under your post shows 1 reply. When I expand the post, I realize there are several replies visible. And I've seen the opposite happen, too. I assume some are from blocked servers? It's definitely disappointing, regardless, as I'd love to engage more fully.

Because the Fediblock is a feature and one of the best parts of Mastodon.

I'm not sure how it would be fixed. The issue as I read it is basically that posts aren't replicated fast & widely enough. Making it that much faster would require lots more network traffic & lots more local storage - one scales net usage, the other scales hosting resources.
I could imagine distributed information stores that reduces those costs, but they'd require a lot of collaboration & commitment to share burdens, & I don't see discussions even starting about that. -

Gerrit Imsieke (gimsieke@mastodon.cloud)'s status on Thursday, 08-Feb-2024 23:52:00 JST Gerrit Imsieke @deepthoughts10 @re_chief @thomasfuchs I think only the replies that have already been retrieved by my instance will be shown.
Therefore I often use “open original page“, and when I reply on this orginal page, I think the “mastodon simplified federation“ Firefox add-on kicks in and opens the other person’s reply in my instance and puts the cursor into the reply form. This works reasonably well.
Maybe an additional button “retrieve full conversation from original site“ will be helpful, too. -

Gerrit Imsieke (gimsieke@mastodon.cloud)'s status on Thursday, 08-Feb-2024 23:59:19 JST Gerrit Imsieke @thomasfuchs @deepthoughts10 @re_chief I agree, but as others have pointed out, it can cause much more bandwidth and storage demand. On the other hand, if it’s only done for text messages (and image/video/audio loading is deferred), it’s probably negligible even for a large thread, compared to transferring and storing a single video.

Anything *can* be fixed, but what's the cost (in time, resources, scaling cost, etc)?& who creates, runs, & funds those aggregation/distribution services?
My point is this isn't a problem that can be fixed by the architects of Mastodon. It's going to require a lot of people doing a lot of work in a lot of projects & a lot of money being spent.

Marty Fouts (martyfouts@mastodon.online)'s status on Friday, 09-Feb-2024 00:17:32 JST Marty Fouts @thomasfuchs While you mean to highlight a behavior of the protocol, the problem of people replying without having read the thread has existed at least since Usenet, and is common on centralized forums as well. There are two aspects, one technical and one social that suggest to me that the benefit of changing the protocol would not justify the cost.

tmk (tmk@social.lugal.io)'s status on Friday, 09-Feb-2024 00:58:41 JST tmk @SadieSays @thomasfuchs I initially thought it was the case, but I have checked - my instance is never blocked when I notice clearly missing replies (And I don't know why someone would block me unless they are just actively blocking everyone they think is banal). Nor do I block any instance myself. It feels more like something doesn't know to relay the reply to me (or forwards it slow enough that the conversation is no longer relevant by the time I get it).
