We’ve had “machine learning” for quite some time. I don’t have any problem with that. I do have a problem with all generative AI that is promising original content only because it’s using millions of copyrighted pieces of writing and art. I don’t think I’ll ever be okay with that, even though it’s unlikely we’ll be able to stop it.

Warner Crocker (warnercrocker@mastodon.social)'s status on Wednesday, 07-Feb-2024 02:57:11 JST Warner Crocker @davidtoddmccarty There’s so much that “machine learning” and Generative AI could do. There’s also so much, as you say, that they shouldn’t. But the good things the technolgoy promises would destroy business and investment models just as much as the bad things can damage jobs. The current gold rush ignores both sides of that coin and is focusing on the quick buck, not the potential postiive.
Thank you for coming to my Ted Ta.k.

Warner Crocker (warnercrocker@mastodon.social)'s status on Wednesday, 07-Feb-2024 03:15:44 JST Warner Crocker @davidtoddmccarty Yup. Govt’s will fall prey to the same forces they have all along and let things get too far down the road before they pretend to take action. The EU possibly excepted.

Trojan Duck (todwest@mastodon.world)'s status on Wednesday, 07-Feb-2024 03:20:55 JST Trojan Duck @WarnerCrocker @davidtoddmccarty We need to create a whole new cabinet-level agency to oversee and regulate the tech sector. It's the only way. Otherwise it's only a matter of time before something spirals out of control. And it might anyway even with a well prepared government.

No. But could they find smart, young, intelligent people to help draft meaningful legislation? Sure. We’ve done it in the past.

CubeThoughts (cubethoughts@mastodon.social)'s status on Wednesday, 07-Feb-2024 06:42:22 JST CubeThoughts @davidtoddmccarty @todwest @WarnerCrocker With keeping the Senate and getting rid of the blue slips, places like the fifth circuit could be revamped. With the House, court expansion could be possible (in addition to actual legislation). But, as you say, slim chances. Especial with SCOTUS having reduced (but not yet obliterated) the Voting Rights Act.
It's getting pretty hard to see a viable return to sanity.

As I said, if that happens it’s sort of game over with this structure. Dems could still win full control, expand the court, and make the necessary changes, but that’s looking a bit more slim.

CubeThoughts (cubethoughts@mastodon.social)'s status on Wednesday, 07-Feb-2024 06:42:24 JST CubeThoughts @todwest @WarnerCrocker @davidtoddmccarty Unfortunately, on the US side, the Supreme Court is also on the verge to take a radical step in dismantling the "administrative state", i.e. the ability for the government to govern. The intent of course being to prevent useful and nimble regulations across all industries. So even an agency would only have the right to do to the letter what congress proscribed, making expert agencies mostly redundant. Soon government will be small enough to drown.
