Folks promoting Bluesky on the fediverse is like the three little pigs doing public relations for the big bad wolf.

But, hey, clearly some folks still haven’t gotten the message that VC and billionaires are bad and that non-corporate spaces have to be protected from corporate ones.

I guess something has to keep the folks who write “what went wrong/if only we’d known” articles in business.

    🤷♂️

@aral Me thinks it's about convenience. Bluesky is three clicks your in. And it's about which groups switched where. People go where their bubbles moved to.

@davew Smart devs, a billionaire, venture capital… hmm, where have I heard this song before?

Sorry, Dave, as far as Jack goes, fool me once…

You could take another approach and consider that activitypub has problems that aren’t being solved, and maybe a fresh start by smart devs, which they are, might get us to a better place sooner.

@aral Not all billionaires are bad people, nor are all VCs. Capitalism isn't entirely bad either, it just needs to be held in check. If somehow Bluesky and Activity Pub can peacefully co-exist, this is a good thing. Neither is perfect but prying open walled gardens is beneficial to all of us.

@davew Well I’m not in bed with anyone but sadly, yes, the flagship instance and original author have rolled out the red carpet to Mark so they will learn what it means to be a vassal state shortly. The fediverse is a stop gap/bridge that I’d like to see exist for as long as possible but, at the end of the day, not my circus, not my monkeys.

      (This is my circus: https://ar.al/2020/08/07/what-is-the-small-web/)

        What is the Small Web?
Updated June 19th, 2023 Sorry, your browser doesn't support embedded videos. But that doesn’t mean you can’t watch it! You can download Small Is Beautiful #23 directly, and watch it with your favourite video player. Small Is Beautiful (Oct, 2022): What is the Small Web and why do we need it? Today, I want to introduce you to a concept – and a vision for the future of our species in the digital and networked age – that I’ve spoken about for a while but never specifically written about:

that was my first reaction when they started, but then i got to know the devs, and i don't think jack is very involved. they have their own ideas.

anyway, i try -- i don't think we win by moralizing. you're in bed with zuck with activitypub, and i wouldn't trust him, and his for sure is in charge of that venture.

@not2b @hikingdude @davew @aral Imagine (still) thinking Dorsey controls Bluesky and the ATprotocol..😄!
Bluesky imo has (will have) better account portability (including posts), better feeds (algorithmic choice), and better moderation (not depending on admin's moodswings) than Mastodon.

        Company - Bluesky
Bluesky is building a protocol for public conversation that can make social networks work more like email, blogs, or phone numbers — the open systems that power the rest of our online lives.

@davew @aral Perhaps; there are certainly issues with ActivityPub. But correct me if I'm wrong, but it appears that the BlueSky approach to federation keeps BlueSky as the central authority. While that can simplify some issues, given previous experience with billionaire owners of social media platforms it isn't comforting.

      @not2b @davew @aral
That's actually the thing: if they are the central authority.. What is the federation? Oh cool I can set up my node - and pay for it, so that they don't have to pay for the scale out. Smart move! Let others pay the servers!

@hikingdude @davew @aral I think it has to do with identity. They want every user to have a persistent identifier that persists across hosts. That does have some advantages, it makes migration easier. But it seems that everyone would register with them, so they'd control the user database. Caveat: I don't know if their final system will work that way, maybe it will be more open.

@simonparzer Millions of people don’t find it difficult, it doesn’t have to scale vertically (it can scale horizontally), and it can be and is sustainable. If what you’re saying is that it’s not the Silicon Valley model then yes, you’re right. And that’s a feature, not a bug.

@aral Mastodon isn't ever going mainstream though. Difficult to understand, expensive to scale, no monetization model.
