     @ghibli My theory: at the start of the movie, the spirit world wants to lure people in, so it's trying to be plausibly attractive. At the end of the movie it isn't, so it can look more natural. You could also make a thematic link to restoring Haku.

     Since the ending of the movie is supposed to be a victory for Chihiro, I don't think she got spirited away for any significant outside-world length of time. (That would cause problems for her parents and her and so not be a true success.)

     @cks @ghibli Yeah, I quite see it similarly. Magic at the start to look good, and at the end no magic anymore or Chihiro either being tainted (food) or similar (ie. magic hairband of Zeniba) revealing the true nature of the gate.
     
     As for outside-world time… given the branches on the car and dust inside I do think it could cause the parents some issues as they're expecting a moving van.

     @lanodan @ghibli Oh yeah, I had forgotten that detail about the car. I guess they'll have some sorting out to do.

     (I suspect it's only the length of time that Chihiro actually experienced in the spirit world, which isn't nothing but probably isn't years.)
