@thomasfuchs Not only are the threads/replies not shown, I always see the number of replies being "0". So many times, I have replied to what I think was an unanswered post, only to find out afterwards that I was That Guy Who Answered The Question After It Was Already Answered By Someone Else.

Qazm (qazm@tiggi.es)'s status on Tuesday, 30-Jan-2024 03:27:18 JST Qazm @thomasfuchs @gilhova IIrc it's because Mastodon didn't go with the AP format for replies (which would have had them listed by URI in the parent post and pushed updates to that proactively).
Not doing that saves some computation (Mastodon is heavy compared to other fediverse software), but indirectly leads to these and other UX problems unless compensated through less efficient means.

Eugen Rochko (gargron@mastodon.social)'s status on Tuesday, 30-Jan-2024 03:36:56 JST Eugen Rochko @codinghorror @Ciantic @thomasfuchs That doesn't seem right. I never have to refresh mine (but I'm also one of those people who turn off their PC at night, and I know apparently that isn't common anymore). What happens when you don't refresh?

Jeff Atwood (codinghorror@infosec.exchange)'s status on Tuesday, 30-Jan-2024 03:36:58 JST Jeff Atwood @Ciantic @thomasfuchs @Gargron to be clear, I would make the feedback as constructive as I can, because I truly want this all to work, for everyone. But the fact that I have to manually refresh the web page (!!) multiple times a day to get things to "work" is just.. nuts?

Jeff Atwood (codinghorror@infosec.exchange)'s status on Tuesday, 30-Jan-2024 03:37:00 JST Jeff Atwood @thomasfuchs one million percent agree. Why is the Mastodon web client in such a sorry state after ALL THESE YEARS? I'm tempted to blog this, it's so annoying.

Jari Pennanen (ciantic@twit.social)'s status on Tuesday, 30-Jan-2024 03:37:00 JST Jari Pennanen @codinghorror @thomasfuchs You should blog it! I don't think @Gargron would mind, he has already taken a lot of criticism.
Some of Mastodon's web UI deficiencies are simply the effect of "not seeing the solution after working on something for a long time", so having alternate takes could help. Mind you Mastodon is already a very old project, so the priorities aren't seen the same way as these newcomers.

Clicking this will load the gap (if there's anything).

elle mundy (exchgr@mastodon.world)'s status on Tuesday, 30-Jan-2024 04:27:21 JST elle mundy @thomasfuchs @codinghorror you probably do need a team with a PM, designer, a handful of devs, and all with the skills and experience to prioritize and do it, all of which costs probably more money than mastodon makes in donations

Tristan Harward (trisweb@m.trisweb.com)'s status on Tuesday, 30-Jan-2024 04:29:35 JST Tristan Harward @thomasfuchs just a heads up, mostly the issue with not reading replies is because all replies aren’t pulled into my local server, not that they’re displayed wrong.
