When people respond to an $83 million judgement with cynical comments about how justice is only for the rich and there is never enough "accountability" I feel like just deleting all of my social media accounts.

I won't do it, but I feel like it more often lately.

It isn't MAGA that makes me think democracy won't work. I expect an anti-democratic contentency.

It's the kind of bizarre expectations others have.

Autocracy is based on lies because so many people don't like the truth.

@licked These are comments I get on social media, not big names.

One option is using my social media accounts to post links to my blog posts and just engaging on my blog.

I think I'm getting a skewed view of the world reading social media comments.

Mastodon is going through something right now. Sorry you are a focus. An increase in this type of behavior has been reported from a wide cross section of popular posters over the last few days. It seems to be a combination of deliberate trolling to sow dissent and demoralization, and genuinely frustrated but naive posters energized by the provocateurs. Cleaning up your feed by blocking these doom-sayers seems to be the best strategy for both the posters and followers.

I am also getting people who want to argue about one of my blog posts, but they absolutely refuse to read the blog post.

Someone just accused me of "promoting" my blog.

I pay almost $300 per month to maintain a blog. I don't use Substack because I don't like asking people for money. Sheesh.

Long form allows me to explain complex ideas. Threads are easier to fire off, but a blog post takes more care.

Yesterday two other popular US politics accounts were targets of a lot of this kind of off-the-wall nay-saying and ad hominem criticism. The reason they do it is generate frustration and despondency in an effort to quiet your voice. It's ugly, but effective. The thing about social media, that we actually saw play out in the trial today, is that a determined few can make life pretty miserable for popular figures.

What we can do as a community is express our support. These folks are a vocal minority. The vast majority here appreciate what you are doing and value what we are learning from your posts. We should not hesitate to convey our positive feedback.

The other thing we can do is help police the feed. When someone is out of line, it should not be exclusively up to the poster. Call them out. Block them. Treat these feeds as a shared resource and help defend their integrity.

...and we can play #WhackATroll with @GottaLaff 😏

She was one of the targets you named.
After she had named one, the admin responsible for the troll must've been.even quicker than me: I didn't even get a chance to block the handle anymore. It was gone.

Also, I think we should rethink moderation, in part.

There are so many well-minded and knowledgeable people here.
Combining this know-how in block lists, for instance by a #6EyesProcess and maybe giving..

...more weight to bigger accounts could make the fediverse more resilient and flexible to such attacks.

The just uncovered 50k #Russian trolls on #X by #Germany's #ForeignOffice, as well as the upcoming elections this year around the globe will most surely lead to a huge increase in such attacks.
Believe in the best, but prepare for the worst.
These are my initial thoughts on this.
Also, changing to #FollowRequest and vetting helps.

The reason Russia created 50,000 accounts is to take advantage of naive policies around delegation of moderation.

For example, inexperienced and/or overworked moderators can prompted to take action based on "wisdom of the crowd" or "popular consent" when the attackers control enough accounts.

Please don't create more opportunities for these attacks with any quick fixes that just came to mind.

      @tcely

""popular consent" when the attackers control enough accounts."

This is precisely why my gut feeling means that it should not be "one man, one vote." Established accounts with a long track record should have more weight.

I am not in favor of "quick fixes" either.
However, all original learning begins with trial and error. It is a new situation. We must evolve.
This doesn't mean, though, that we don't discuss things first before acting.
