   The Chinese have rituals around womanly cycles. (Don't get me started on when I reached puberty. It was a FAMILY AFFAIR when I started menstruating. In Chinese families, embarrassment is guaranteed during your teen years.)

   One of the things we do as women is to drink 八珍汤 (bāzhēntāng) or eight-treasure decoction. We drink it after a cycle (never right before!) to rebuild our strength, so to speak. This tonic has reduced my PMS symptoms, btw.

     @geraineon lol maybe it's a Peranakan thing but my grandma gathered the family, announced my ascension to womanhood and made me that special soup. And then told me to sit on the stairs and climb down (or something). Then my mum took me to a room to explain the birds and the bees. I died of embrasment that day. 😭😆

     I don't remember being embarrassed by my family about it but maybe coz my family doesn't actually do rituals. Just the soup? I don't even know what ritual you're talking about (if it's not the soup...)

     @liztai It wasn't until I could see my scalp that I really knew that my hair loss wasn't just a little bad like I had thought before. Some doctors say women don't really realize it until half the hair is gone and I'm afraid I reached that point. The dermatologist was annoyed with me so a year later a woman GP tested my iron and sure enough I had anemia this whole time and my periods got heavier...wish I had this tea!

     @gentrifiedrose ask the shop. They will tell you if its OK. May even recommend a Traditional Chinese Physician.

     @gentrifiedrose darn. It's pretty affordable here. Maybe you don't really need to go to see one yet. Can always try the tonic I suppose.

     @liztai There are a lot of TCM doctors here since its a big city but so expensive. I went to one 12 years ago, ouch. My wallet is still hurting.
