It was very popular in Japan.
That was the beginning of anime portraying girls as younger and younger while keeping them sexualized.
I'm not asking you to "take my word for it", but it even shocked the straights. MSM art pages covered it. (I'm also not going to dig up a pre-Internet newspaper article. It happened.)

Weedle (weedle@poa.st)'s status on Wednesday, 24-Jan-2024 12:05:25 JST Weedle @LostInCalifornia @EvilSandmich @William_The_Dragonborn I think youre conflating the exploitation in "worldwide appeal" with "the made the characters more childlike (which you really still havent proven)" where as the much more reasonable cause of anime's explosion across the globe was that distribution methods became more streamlined (not even to talk about the internet of the 2000s) with CDs, fan-dubbing, etc around that time. -

I was attempting to work within the 1970s-1990s framework you had established, as our discussion was centered around the origins of anime, according to you, has nefarious child-predator foundations. -

The worldwide appeal for anime came after they started with child bodied women. Mid 1980's to 1990's.

But I think your just smoking crack over there in cali.
Far as I know and as far as I can tell, japs always drew things with big eyes, and animation from early disney which inspired a lot of the early stuff had similarly large eyes.
Also, you ascribe the "big eyes" to girls, most anime characters period have large/disproportionate eyes. Its a method to make up for the detail lost in the medium. -
