@lyda I was just going to say something similar, but you beat me to it! While each family that is forced to leave their homes is an individual tragedy, overall the fact that they choose to come to the US is a net benefit for the country. @anderspuck@konfun@j2dumfounded@lindamarie
Anyway, to return to our original topic, it is clear that Speaker Johnson is playing games with funding for Ukraine and is really not concerned about outcomes for Ukrainians.
In case anybody needs to know what the strategy is, it is to give Ukraine all of the weapons it possibly desires, so that they can push Putin and his orcs back across the border where they belong.
@eva_chaos When I was a bank teller years ago, I can't tell you how many customers came in who were "Jose's Landscaping" or "Maria's Housekeeping" or "Celebrimbor's Smithing & Forging" (extra points if anyone gets that last one 😂).
@DeeGLloyd@lyda@anderspuck@konfun@j2dumfounded@lindamarie Having the means to start a business will get you into pretty much any country on the planet. Nobody is going to turn that down. There are a lot of people who come to the US to do just that, and they are the ones that statistically do better than other immigrant groups because they aren't having to raise kids in dire circumstances. There's just this weird American belief that living in poverty in the US is a good thing.
@DeeGLloyd@lyda@anderspuck@konfun@j2dumfounded@lindamarie People benefit their community when they have an employer who is willing to pay taxes, healthcare, and a competitive wage for them. Otherwise they are a benefit for the employer and no one else. The problem is the employers. Uncontrolled immigration is a huge money-maker for many companies, and there has never been any such thing as the trickle-down-effect.
