a link allison-chan sent some months ago in a thread put it well: linux stuff is guided and mostly (80% i'd say) handled by companies with money. Most hobbyist developers don't have much input or ability to do anything in regards to that. And it's for the best, because otherwise the Linux world would be like, say, Plan 9.
@mischievoustomato@allison@nyoom pretty similar to macos too in that atleast last i used it it was mostly like small but well down applications with the more popularity when they fit the ux
@mischievoustomato@nyoom@allison well it has its own pretty unique shit at the very least software doesn't fit outside it much. but yes it did have some success even early on, i think i recall an interview on the lunduke show a few months after they launched their pay what you want model and somebody was already makign a living income off of it
@mischievoustomato@nyoom@allison > A number of people support themselves just by being Apple app devs, even outside the App Store I've heard. Imagine if that culture came to the FOSS world. the elementary os appstore was really successful and cool in that regard, but sadly limited to elementary os
also, adding to this: it's hard but not impossible, but I'd say that in the FOSS world, the biggest issue is the lack of groups with a cohesive vision (more often than not you see a lot of splintering and fragmentation), but the other also if-not-as-big issue is the lack of money. It'll be very hard for the FOSS dream to be an actual thing unless people start donating more to FOSS devs. Apple users will gladly pay a lot of money for apps they like and use often, and look how big Apple is. A number of people support themselves just by being Apple app devs, even outside the App Store I've heard. Imagine if that culture came to the FOSS world. It's one of the things that make me feel really hyped when I think about them, but at the same time I know it most likely never happen.
@eris@allison@mischievoustomato@nyoom i stopped using elementary because my laptop at the time was too new. trying to run pantheon on another distro is.. woozy. possible, but i would have been putting in the whole penance myself since maintainers gave up on it.
but aside from their weird issues with their founders... they're probably the only self-owned desktop outlet actually trying right now.
not the biggest fan of Vala but. seems to be working for them?
@eris@nyoom@icedquinn@mischievoustomato I used to use elementary as my main OS for a good bit of the 2010s, rather liked it but I had to end up moving on due to the tortured development cycles (same deal with Pop!_OS come to think of it)
@allison@nyoom@icedquinn@mischievoustomato Pop!_OS is fascinating because they took ubuntu, which is such a buggy often breaking piece of shit nowadays, and somehow made it even worse and more prone to issues
