also, adding to this: it's hard but not impossible, but I'd say that in the FOSS world, the biggest issue is the lack of groups with a cohesive vision (more often than not you see a lot of splintering and fragmentation), but the other also if-not-as-big issue is the lack of money. It'll be very hard for the FOSS dream to be an actual thing unless people start donating more to FOSS devs. Apple users will gladly pay a lot of money for apps they like and use often, and look how big Apple is. A number of people support themselves just by being Apple app devs, even outside the App Store I've heard. Imagine if that culture came to the FOSS world.
It's one of the things that make me feel really hyped when I think about them, but at the same time I know it most likely never happen.
