     @lain@lain.com Dutch rowhouses is like American suburbs but the houses are next to each other so you don't spent as much on heating, and I can walk to the nearest supermarket in 5 minutes.

     @wholemilk@social.linux.pizza @lain@lain.com Those are traditional canal houses that you see in all of the old city centres. They are pretty unaffordable to live in for most people as they are historic buildings.
     
     The typical rowhouses that 60% of the population lives in looks more like this: Suburbia but more sustainable

     @skylar@wolfgirl.bar @lain@lain.com entire point of a supermarket is it's a big storeHere it isn't. We have a ton of small supermarkets scattered all over the place.
     
     Making the store smaller makes it easy to just walk through it and grab what you need. I go grocery shopping two or three times a week and I buy small amounts of stuff so it is always fresh.
     
     If I buy large amounts of groceries for long periods of time I often have stuff spoil and such. It's just a lot more flexible overall.

     @SuperDicq @lain y'all always bring this up as an advantage but why would you want to walk to the supermarket of all places?
     the entire point of a supermarket is it's a big store for buying a whole ass cart full of groceries that'll last you for a couple weeks, so having a convenient way to bring your shit home without stealing the cart is necessary
     the average american in a suburb probably lives within a 5 minute drive to a supermarket and spends less time overall buying groceries

     i'm as scatterbrained as possible without being a vtuber and need an emergency grocery trip like less than once a year. putting stuff on a grocery list for what you plan to make over the next week is just not that difficult.
     if i did forget the milk....why walk there? on what planet is that going to be faster or more convenient than driving? is it a beautiful day outside? if so why the hell would i want to go for a walk in a city of all places, even if there was not a single swarthy race or homosexual?

     i go grocery shopping once a week at most, sometimes once in 2 weeks if i'm busy or the weather's annoying

     @Tsuki @lain @SuperDicq @Paultron well so is driving to one in a place with good road infrastructure. i can't think of anywhere in Europe this would apply to, all their cities were already built for hundreds if not thousands of years before cars were even invented, so everything about it is going to be annoying, from the traffic problems to the narrow roads to the shortage of parking.

     Being able to walk to a convenience/grocery store in a place with good walking infrastructure is very nice. Unfortunately I don't think America has the culture or geography for this to ever work in our lifetimes.

     yellow for european, american, and mexican cooking into sauces, white for toppings on hot dog or burg, green onion rings from the green part for asian food topping, the white part of the green onion minced with aromatics for asian and some french recipes

     @skylar @lain @SuperDicq except for special cases like dry aging steaks under the CPU fans, i refuse to keep meat in the fridge for more than a few hours. Either I cook it day of or it goes into the freezer and takes a major, permanent hit to its quality. Vegetables will only last a couple days as well. Green onions or baby bok choy after like 3 days are basically inedible. Bread/tortilla has a similar lifespan as well

     anywhere it's close. Repeatedly driving your car short distances is bad for it and burns gas.

     @Paultron @lain @SuperDicq short trips only cause problems if you do nothing but trips too short for your oil & other fluids to warm up for months on end. nobody wants chocolate milk oil from not getting hot enough to burn off condensation, but you can just change it sooner.
     despite Biden's best efforts, burning a little bit of gas to drive 3 miles isn't some huge financial burden.
     
     i get the white or yellow onions and they last a long time.
