    @apressler @WearsHats @juliewebgirl I've never understood the genealogy anyway. They are all different and besides they go through Joseph who isn't supposed to be the boy's father. You'd think at some point they would have cleared that up......

      @WearsHats @juliewebgirl To muddy the waters more, it’s highly unlikely he was actually born in Bethlehem - the Roman census story is doubted by some credible scholars. But it’s a necessary bit of retcon to satisfy the prophecy in Micah.

      IMO, simply asserting the genealogy found in Matthew would have been sufficient. But the bishops of ancient Christianity were more literal minded.

      The spring date is deduced from clues in the biblical texts. For example, shepherds in the fields are apparently more of a spring thing. The winter date is often argued working from Zechariah’s ministry being in the springtime from equally dubious clues. But there’s little doubt the official feast day was set in order to co-opt Yule celebrations.

      @juliewebgirl It's something I've been told by more than one person who knows better than I, but I don't have a reference.

      @WearsHats
      The 25th is when the Sun actually starts to "move" after 3 days of... cave, rebirth, blah blah... hey wait. I don't think I've ever heard anyone say his birthday is in spring. (It is, duh) Do you have a link/reference?

      2000 years ago, there may have been a Middle Eastern Jew who preached that kindness and empathy are more important than Biblical rules and capitalism. The descendants of his followers retroactively declared him a messiah in contradiction of the lore. 1000 years later, they moved his birthday from spring to winter in order to embrace, extend, extinguish the Druids, but they missed the solstice by a few days. If you are celebrating tonight, I wish you love, joy, and peace.
