   From @pluralistic. So good: He describes "switching costs" from one social net to another is a poisonous root cause of the power imbalance commercial platforms have over users.

   The Fediverse's promise to greatly reduce "switching costs" is vital. We must keep improving the technology so it's seamless & switching costs to approach zero.

   Then power shifts back to the users and the cost for bad behavior of any service goes dramatically up.

     @tchambers @pluralistic The end game we should be aiming for is one where your identity is independent of your instance, your posts are content addressed, and the role of your instance is as a party willing to provide always online hosting for them, vouch that your identity is not one they've banned for abuse, and act as a "privacy union" to fetch and cache others' posts for viewing at your leisure so others can't track you through your interaction with their posts.

     Remember the time when you couldn't change mobile phone carriers without losing your phone number? The carriers had all the power and kept consumers locked in because there was no alternative. The change to portable numbers revolutionized the mobile industry. We need something similar in The social network world. @tchambers @pluralistic #fediverse

     @eddeeMN @tchambers @pluralistic The AT protocol of Bluesky offers that (sorta): you can set your domain name as your handle. And then it's just your domain name that you control: https://blueskyweb.xyz/blog/4-28-2023-domain-handle-tutorial

     Of course, it only works on Bluesky because they aren't actually federating yet.
