I really do not think it's an overstatement to say that, when it comes to Mark Zuckerberg's vile garbage, the attitudes, decisions, and responses of Fediverse folks and their admins *right now* will hugely impact the future of the Fediverse itself. Time to hold the line and make this last stand against the corporate dominance of the internet. Time to make a choice. Either "1" or "0." It really is that simple. So much is at stake. Some of us remember the Indymedia network, for example, and the fatal mistakes that were made: https://www.mediaactivist.com/manifesto/
@riotmuffin Yes! Exactly! And the challenges are so similar from that to this with the cost of running servers. And the same with the communication skills but in reverse when it comes to a lot of Fediverse and/or FOSS and/or Linux folks; I still smile when I remember, years back, lamenting the beauty and efficiency of Linux while it remained used by less than 3% of computer users and a developer retorted that they're not in marketing and way too busy making cool shit to waste time on communicating the advantages haha...bless their hearts!
@MediaActivist ahh, Indymedia…. trying to talk to folks about the fediverse now feels a lot like trying to get folks to publish to Indymedia, back when I was part of a small imc collective. Folks love the idea… but so rarely followed thru.
I think part of our limitation then was that we were great thinkers and communicators, but poor organizers. (Oh, and had no money, but that’s a given lolol)
@MediaActivist Imho the issue is getting discussed way to hot atm. We also have to be careful not to fall into a form of early adapter elitism. Obv. FB, TwiX etc. have made huge contributions to the enshitification of the internet. But when i ponder why most of my twitter-bubble did not leave that toxic platform, one answer is switching cost. They would lost their network. I did. Many radical artists depend on instagram for their livelihoods. If they can switch without that loss, that's better.
