@thomasfuchs also… :gestures at private keys, massive diesel guzzling yachts: there’s individual responsibility arguments for the wealthy. But the average person? Zero impact incrementally.

Stu (tehstu@hachyderm.io)'s status on Wednesday, 06-Dec-2023 05:06:27 JST Stu @thomasfuchs Not directed at you, but more of a "I lack the ability to quote post" so I'm unsure how to pose this question. Hopefully someone reading this will know:
Why are we ceasing production of ICE and switching to EVs? Grasping for a cynical reason, to give car manufacturers their 3D Blu Ray or 4k TV moment?

zeke (zeke@mastodon.social)'s status on Wednesday, 06-Dec-2023 07:11:59 JST zeke @thomasfuchs I freelanced from a travel trailer on the road for two years. Every part of that life was a lesson in maximizing efficiency with limited power/water/fuels/weight/space/waste/bandwidth. And none of that time was spent commuting.

James T Monkey (teamonkey@mastodon.social)'s status on Wednesday, 06-Dec-2023 08:25:36 JST James T Monkey @thomasfuchs I get the sentiment, but the energy and water use really depends on a lot of factors, especially how far you drive.
My diesel does just under 50 UK mpg on a good day. Call it 10 miles a litre. A 240 mile round trip to see the family uses about 24 litres, seems right. 2.7kg of CO2 is released per litre of diesel burnt, so about 65kg for that round trip. If it was hauling a trailer or caravan it’d produce 3 or 4 times more.

James T Monkey (teamonkey@mastodon.social)'s status on Wednesday, 06-Dec-2023 08:26:03 JST James T Monkey @thomasfuchs For comparison, Yesterday, my home gas boiler used 105kWh to heat the house. The house is over 100 years old and could be better insulated. It was -1C outside with freezing rain. 0.22kg CO2/kWh is released by UK household gas. 23kg of CO2 yesterday.
Which is to say, heating my house on one of the few coldest days of the year releases as much CO2 as a 85 mile drive in a small family diesel that isn’t hauling anything.
