     @ntnsndr I once ended up in a hot spring with a yakuza boss and his underling. Hot springs, like watering holes, are neutral territory.

     @ntnsndr In these situations I try to use my white-male status to [safely] subvert rooted assumptions: Friendly small-talk or even sympathizing with frustrations about government and corporate power, then I reveal things that they may have been predisposed to judge: I am a socialist, journalist, went to liberal arts college, etc.

     Meet ensuing disagreements kindly but firmly. No catharsis or immediate results, but such experiences can accumulate in a person’s psyche!

     @evanmalmgren Thanks for this. What you describe is basically what I walked through in my mind afterward. I was also just personally curious about his story.

     One reason I didn't strike up the conversation was I wasn't 100% sure at the time that I interpreted the tattoo correctly. But I did.

     @ntnsndr ify, hot springs are interesting for the range of ppl they throw into intimate proximity to just… sit around together.

     I also think it’s usually fine to ask about that kind of thing if there’s doubt or it seems “gray.” One time I was wearing a Siege [band] shirt and someone was about to call me out bc they thought it was a Siege [book] shirt. I’m glad they told me bc it hadn’t even occurred to me that others might read it that way 😅
