   About twice per week online I have to ask myself “is this a bad AI chatbot, or a Dutch person trying to make friends with me?” Honest to goodness I love you, but about half of you would fail a Turing Test. The other day someone in reply to asking how old he was said “I’ve been running my current operating system 26 years.”

     @BethanyBlack There's a simple telltale: Dutch people always get "if" and "when" backwards.

     I don't know why, but ever since I noticed it, it's remarkably consistent.

     Most memorable incident was somebody provoking her 8.5-month pregnant friend into screaming "WHEN!!! When the baby is born!"

     So the consensus from almost all of the Dutch people I’ve mentioned this to is “yeah, we’re quite odd”

     Muting this thread now. But in answer to where this is going now it’s outside my usual circle: It’s not autism. It’s something else entirely. I’m autistic, I made being autistic one if my special interests, it’s not autism.

     @BethanyBlack as an 🇺🇸 who lived in NL for 2 years, the Dutch are very direct in a way that just does not compute to most Americans.

     It actually is very helpful in the end because they will just tell you what they want and not make a fuss about it, but it takes quite a bit of getting used to.

     @BethanyBlack If it makes you feel any better, in the last 24 hours I’ve had someone both challenge my age (Mastodon) and how long been using Linux, the operating system (BlueSky)

     And yes I know, you’d think that the social networks that this happened on would be reversed. 😂
