If you run into people on here who are breaking the rules of your server, even if they're from another server, you can still report them:

    1. Go to the post with the problematic content
    2. Click ⋯ at the bottom of the post
    3. Complete the report and (if you want to) anonymously send the report to the other server's admin too

Beacuse the report goes both to your server's admin and also optionally to the other person's admin, the problem can be dealt with at both ends.

If the other server doesn't act upon the report, there are still lots of things your server admin can do, ranging from blocking the specific abuser, to silencing posts from the other server, to blocking the other server completely.

There is always options open to admins even when abuse comes in from other servers. But the beginning of that process is reporting the problem to them, so it's important you let your admin know if rules are being broken.

@feditips the problem is the person owns the server and blocks you, the report button doesn’t work and have to reply to admin to over see the problem. You’ll also encounter alternative methods that bypass the block feature and make the problem worse. The block button is not the answer to trolls or bots. There’s needs a PSA to mastodon developers to solve theses issues.

One thing Mastodon servers could do straight away is switch on "authorized fetch" (https://fedi.tips/authorized-fetch/).

It's off by default apparently because it uses more resources and used to break a lot of connections.

However, authorized fetch does seem to work much better nowadays? Maybe more servers need to switch it on?

(For whatever it's worth, been running authorized fetch on my own instance at social.growyourown.services and haven't run into any problems so far...)

@firecat @feditips the problem here lies not within Mastodon necessarily, but the underlying protocol, ActivityPub — there are ongoing attempts to fix, e.g., the recently published OcapN paper, but it's ultimately kinda complicated

I did a thread asking about authorized fetch before switching it on, and no one seemed certain if there would be problems.

So, I did a trial period, and no one reported any problems reaching the accounts (I was asking via FediTips which wasn't on authorized fetch). And my hosting company said there weren't any problems at their end. So I just left it on.

As far as I can tell it does work now? Would like to hear if there are issues though.

@feditips @firecat I believe the recommendation is still to not use authorised fetch, but I can't recall the details.

(OcapN is really interesting because it embeds the permissions in the activity itself)

Only report I got was from someone developing their own ne ActivityPub platform, but IIRC they were able to change their code to make it work.

You can ask your admin directly if you want an update? That's the advantage of being on a smaller server 👍

The admin has a private interface that records all moderation actions and reports, they can look it up there.

(For anyone wondering who their admin is, the admin's account and public email address is on the about page of your server, usually the server's website plus /about at the end. For example in Steven's case it would be https://sfba.social/about)

@feditips I’ve used this reporting mechanism twice. I don’t know if I should expect a response from my local admin or not, but I didn’t get one in either case. I have no idea what happened after I reported the behavior.

Oh no 😞 Sorry to hear.

Out of interest, how did they reply to you if the reporting was anonymous? Or did they guess from the contents of the report that it was yours?

Speaking to single-user or small instances, I reported some pretty offensive behavior by an account on one to that instance's admin, who literally laughed at me in reply

And then proceeded to brigade me via *my* instance mods and admins

Took some fast talking and screenshots on my part to get my own instance admins to climb down off *my* case

They replied to me directly in the thread after I had posted that I'd reported the OP

Last time I'll make that mistake

It was quite an eye-opener as to how impregnable a very small, single-admin instance can be against reports or complaints

I guess only action in that situation is ask the admin to have some kind of defederation of the instance?

Another approach in longer term might be allowlists, they could provide safer servers (with lower reach being the compromise).

Think @gotosocial has allowlists on its roadmap?

@feditips to add to this, if it's a reply / reply to a reply that you see, you can report to your server mods and to the OPs mods, and to the replier's mods.

p.s. When admins click on a post or account, they have some extra options that ordinary users don't see. They can open any user's account in the moderation interface, which gives them these options:

Sensitive - Force all this user's media attachments to be flagged as sensitive

Limit - Prevent user from being able to post with public visibility, hide their posts and notifications from people not following them

Suspend - Prevent any interaction from or to this account and delete its contents
