It takes 12,000 plays on Spotify for a band to make the same as you buying one of their T-shirts.

Jason Evangelho (killyourfm@layer8.space)'s status on Friday, 10-Nov-2023 00:23:29 JST Jason Evangelho @duco I'm trying to make a point, not be super scientific about it. You're right, it's not exact but I hope the message comes across.
To scale it down a bit: you could give your favorite band $1 on Bandcamp, or stream a song of theirs about 400 times on Spotify...

Duco (duco@norden.social)'s status on Friday, 10-Nov-2023 00:23:31 JST Duco @killyourfm Sounds like this comparison has a huge error. Like a shirt could be sold between €5 and €50. Probably even more. And how big of that shirt is the share of the band? So to what price correlates the 12.000 Spotify plays?

The fact is that nothing has changed about Bandcamp's payment policies, so despite new ownership this has not affected how bands get paid.

As nothing has changed right now, and no changes have been announced, I will continue to put my music on Bandcamp, and support the bands i love there.

Julien Tournay (jto@mastodon.top)'s status on Friday, 10-Nov-2023 00:42:34 JST Julien Tournay @killyourfm no they don't. They pay based on the % their revenue based on the % of streams an artist represents relative to the total number of streams. Aka if you're 1% of all the streams, you get 1% of whatever Spotify pays to all the artists. Also Spotify does not pay artists directly.

Jason Evangelho (killyourfm@layer8.space)'s status on Friday, 10-Nov-2023 00:51:29 JST Jason Evangelho @jto My message is simple, Julien: realize how little revenue bands make when you stream their music compared to buying their physical merch.

Duco (duco@norden.social)'s status on Friday, 10-Nov-2023 00:53:07 JST Duco @killyourfm for someone, like me, who doesn't values music much, that sounds like a pretty good deal. I mean 400 plays = 1€ is a good ratio. It's similar on what YouTube pays for views. And producing videos is usually more complicated than producing audio.

NetHandle (nethandle@infosec.exchange)'s status on Friday, 10-Nov-2023 12:41:19 JST NetHandle @killyourfm ok so let’s math this out, because 12000 sounds like a big number, but we all know journalism isn’t what it used to be, and big numbers get used to bamboozle people.
The #1 most listened to song on Spotify has 3.8 billion listens. According to Wikipedia.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Spotify_streaming_records
That’s a big number.
3800000000. How many tshirts is that? 3.8 billion / 12 thousand = 316666.67. I have no idea what a band tshirt is worth. Last time I was at a concert they were $80 but that seemed high. -

The point vibes with my general sense that creatives and people who value creative work are getting hosed by tech companies. Not that I have a solution. I miss having a cd collection.

But that’s just one song that holds the record. What’s the average? Probably significantly lower given the sheer volume of music available.Aaaaand I’m having a hard time sourcing accurate statistics. Unfortunate, it seemed like a fun exercise in math.
