@ryanhoulihan Now when a conspiracy theorist wants to argue how "Jews control everything," they can simply point to the media coverage of the Israel-Palestine conflict. It's incredulous and woeful how one-sided the coverages are.
@ryanhoulihan To be sure, Netanyahu (and ALL the Israelis who keep voting for him and Likud) Hamas (and all the Palestinians/Gazans who voted for them) are. They have both chosen this fight instead of supporting the 2-state option. They have both been barrelling towards this for decades now. I don't have any good alternative to the 2-state solution. Does anyone?
@ryanhoulihan The coverage seems even more devoid of balance than the 9/11 era. I try to think how I’ve never been in the positon of either side there, but it is shocking the level of dehumanising hatred on both sides. The perennial Peter Capaldi Doctor Who clip always comes to mind. So many people condemned to die because a small number of men can’t sit down and agree a way not to. https://youtu.be/BJP9o4BEziI?si=fj1FlzeE6LLs8YNh
@no1lion99@ryanhoulihan True. One may ask why the 90% in Gaza allow the Hamas to rule, but in truth what is it they can do? Exterminate everything and still there will be a few terrorists left, and that is enough to restart everything. Like cockroaches.
@no1lion99@ryanhoulihan The reality here is that, if Israel does nothing, nothing changes in Gaza and Hamas. If Israel does what they are doing, which is razing Gaza to the ground and everyone with it, it also changes nothing with Gaza and Hamas.
@locksmithprime@ryanhoulihan Here in the US we have had almost 24/7 coverage since the Oct 7 attacks. I have mostly posted about those in Gaza because the coverage is so unbalanced. There isn’t 24/7 coverage when Israel bulldozes homes and uses the army to displace Palestinians in the West Bank.
Hamas attacks were horrific. Using state power to reneg on agreements and force people off their land is also horrific.
@ryanhoulihan@locksmithprime Furthermore, none of the past context, no matter how horrific, is an international legal excuse to target a group. There’s no “we are angry and don’t know what else to do” exception to international human rights laws.
I am careful in general to remember at all times that this region has a history more complex than many are capable of grasping without literally years of study.
That said, if Gaza gets razed, others will come for revenge, and I, for one, will have trouble giving a shit if the same happens to Israel.
@no1lion99@ryanhoulihan Right. Hamas knew all that, this is precisely the reason they attacked. They knew Israel would react as they always do, with extreme aggression, and would be immediately condemned by the international community. This is how it functions there since always. And Israel is very well versed into playing the victim and amplifying when they are in fact the victim. I was raised Jewish, this is a skill learned very early.
@no1lion99@ryanhoulihan I said "one may ask", not "I". You realize it is one question that comes up. I am more realistic: whether palestinians want it or not, there is little they can do.
@psychictides@ryanhoulihan are you saying Israelites are settlers/colonists? My understanding is that Jews are indigenous people of the land too, which doesn't make killing a lot of people right, but certainly isn't the same storyline of colonialism.
@psychictides@ryanhoulihan while I am picking up some strong mockery in your response, I genuinely ask questions to be better able to understand conflicting viewpoints. The reading I have done generally points to this being a much more complex narrative. Here is one example of an article referencing the complexity. https://www.thecrimson.com/article/2017/8/29/brooks-no-stranger-homeland/. If you have an opposing set of evidence that says Jews were never a people belonging to the region, please post sources instead of clown pictures. I respect ideas outside of my own, and this narrative is one I am deeply trying to understand better.
@ryanhoulihan@psychictides that's fair. Nobody should be allowed to displace other people from their land with violence. But what if some of them weren't wealthy, & some were refugees hoping to find a place where they were allowed to practice their religion without being killed for it, returning to a place that they prayed to return to for generations because it was their homeland that they were driven off of with violence, and if some already lived there and never left... Do all get categorized in the same bucket? Is it because of the color of their skin? Jewish wealth that exists is in spite of extreme hardship, slavery, discrimination and tragedy. Not every light skin face is the same. I don't believe in taking from others or killing anyone, I just wonder if you have considered that there is complexity to the story. I also wish you a good night. May all children grow in a place where they can find safety.
@ryanhoulihan@psychictides I don't think there should be an ethno/religious state. Although I am half Jewish, I honestly just started learning about it and reading different perspectives and I am trying to understand. It seems like you are more interested in calling me names than having a conversation so we can stop talking now. I am not pro or against a side here, I just was confused about the idea of it being a colonial story since I understood that my ancestors were indigenous to the region. Pro tip, of you want to change people's minds who are open to discussing and learning, don't call names.
Palestine is a nation of mostly children. Most Palestinians aren’t even eligible to vote. And the last time they had an election was 16 years ago. If you had bothered to learn the basic recent history of Palestine before posting agitprop for American colonialism you would know this.
And "one may ask whether the people from Gaza..." becomes "I hereby state that the people from Gaza *DOES ALLOW* Hamas to rule." You are. No, you are. No, you are. No, you are. No, you. You. You are. This is getting smarter by the minute.
You said that the people of Gaza “allow Hamas to rule.” This is such a ridiculous statement that yes everyone other than you in this conversation is pointing out what a mendacious person you are.
@psychictides@no1lion99@ryanhoulihan As in being Jewish up to a certain age and then changing one's path? Actually, better not to use "one", because it seems this construct is grossly misunderstood here. I wonder whether I had written "people may ask", or "Gertrude would ask", it would have entered minds in a complete different way. At least, when I hear people telling "people say that...", I do not hear an immediate debate attempting to lay the statement to the person saying it, and the whole side information is completely lost in the subsequent shouting match.
@BinarySorcerer@no1lion99@ryanhoulihan I did, some 30 years ago. What changed? It was a period in which no rockets were flying around and names were different, but perhaps that was about it.
