A Tv is a simple device, it does one thing and does it well.
A SmartTV is a complex device, it does everything badly, including being a Tv.
Now replace Tv with cellphone and SmartTV with smartphone. -

And if I were to make my own phone it would likely run something like FreeRTOS or some OS derived from L4. -

Kerosene (kerosene@bae.st)'s status on Saturday, 14-Oct-2023 04:47:26 JST Kerosene @lanodan @sjw Would you rather have a phone running a custom OS (no Linux kernel, no GNU user space)? I imagine that might be the best option instead of forcing every device on earth to run the same server OS :ina_drool: -

A lot of infrastructure including emergency ones relies on 2G, things like road workers, lifts, … are dependent on 2G.
Heck even things like the weird phones grandparents at home would have to call emergency services when they fall down or have an attack are dependent on 2G. -

Your New Marijuana Injecting Waifu :weed: (sjw@bae.st)'s status on Saturday, 14-Oct-2023 05:10:43 JST Your New Marijuana Injecting Waifu :weed: @lanodan @Kerosene same. Everyone was given fee phones. We just wanted to repurpose that spectrum for 5G since it was hardly being used. Funnily enough 3G was shut down years before 2G because it was getting virtually no use at all. -

Just like how a lift (elevator for USA? I never remember which) has a phone part to call for emergencies when it gets stuck, which is specially useful given that most of them are faraday cages.
Cutting off 2G is a thing you plan for 10+ years because of it's massive usage, quite like IPv4→IPv6 migration. -

>even the idea of actually shutting down 2G is having a hard time, because here you simply do not cut people off from a public service.
Yes neither do we. Our phone companies were required to give everyone that would be affected an LTE flip phone or smartphone (depending on what they had) before they shut it down so their service wouldn't be disrupted. Especially for 911.
How is it that hard? Everyone that's affected just gets a free phone with no strings attached from their mobile provider months before the shutdown date. Yeah it sucks for the phone companies but they're the ones that want to shut it down in the first place so they should be the ones to pocket the bill. At least that's how we've always done it here in the US. -

I think the utility meters in some parts of the US use 2G data connections. I haven't seen a meter reader come by here in years.Haelwenn /элвэн/ :triskell: likes this. -
