    ffs!
this shit does not sound good at #BandCamp

The whole SongTradr thing is not sitting well with me, but BC is the only place I release and I have no real contingency. Self hosting sounds like a nightmare, but perhaps that's where we are headed?...

@SrRochardBunson nothing on the whiteboard leads to victory atm

A federated but hosted and managed resource for artists to join would be a nightmare for regulatory mess and agreed upon fiscal disbursing method.

No self hosting is simple for all.

There isn't an obvious platform to bolt on to. There are many possibilities, all will hit artists' ability to navigate or ethically tolerate very differently.

Sadly, "just make a fedi bandcamp" is kind of fingernails on chalkboard message to get.

      @radiofreefedi

Thank you very much for the input! That shuts the door on that option.

What do you think a viable federated music distribution model would look like?

@jamesbritt @fstateaudio @yoniden @jessica @etherdiver @elsemusic @limneticvillains sorry, let me also add @SrRochardBunson and @radiofreefedi bc maybe the solution to all this will somehow be federated :)

Hell yeah, we definitely need to be having this conversation!

I am very intrigued by #FunkWhale but I haven't played around with it yet.

There has to be a relatively easy way to combine that with a payment processing.

@SrRochardBunson In our own experience we don't enjoy the time sink, clunk and difficulty using it when submissions are offered via it. It does not help enforce good meta or attribution data as well.

It is not comfortably usable, extendable, efficient, well federated, or easily discoverable front-end for artists and labels.

Smashing donation links into it or trying to integrate a shop into the experience might not be on balance healthy

Very much an online personal jukebox at the core.

@jamesbritt @fstateaudio @yoniden @jessica im glad we're having this conversation and i think we should add @etherdiver @elsemusic @limneticvillains and maybe many more than im forgetting at the moment.

if we can back up really quick... i think the problem that has *always* existed is that the means on distribution is not in the hands of the artists. i dont know if relying on anything amazon-wise is going to be much more than a temporary bandaid on the problem. as @jamesbritt suggested...and this works for most of us but maybe not for ether diver and anyone else with serious numbers.... we go the very clunky route of emailing zips to our fans and then can paypal (but maybe librepay?) the money to the artists.
i have a NAS at home that i've been using to stream my own audio collection where ever i go. is there something we can do with that? if we have a handful of NAS's, can they somehow be networked together, mirroring content, and providing streaming for a decent amount of people? we also need someone who knows much more about IT than me. when i have the NAS connected to a URL, i spend all day getting bad actors trying to log into the system lol.

@jamesbritt @yoniden here's a post from @jessica that shows one solution. I personally don't want to use AWS, but ymmv, as they say.

      https://www.voidconspiracy.com/creating-a-self-hosted-music-storefront-using-aws-s3-and-sendowl/

I used paypal w/an automated protected d/l system back in the day, haven't really looked into modern equivalents.

@yoniden The sticking point, I think, is how do self-hosters best collect payment? Plausibly maybe you tell people to use paypal and when you get paid email the zip file. But it's clunky and doesn't scale well.
