    *shrugs*

Like I said tho; it literally doesn't make any sense for the Liberal Party to do this on purpose. This is like, an absolute political boner with international scope and ramifications.

If FREELAND had invited the guy, I think we'd be having a different conversation - and that woman should absolutely NEVER be the Lib candidate for Prime Minister.

But they didn't have anything at all to gain by trying to whitewash a 98 year old nazi. SHOULD they have known? Yes, read how they INTRODUCED him and tell me how long it takes YOU to figure out he's a nazi:

"Rota said that Hunka was “a Ukrainian Canadian war veteran from the Second World War who fought for Ukrainian independence against the Russians.”

But Canadian politics is like this; a lot of these guys are assclowns who rely on the "Mayberry, but the size of China" nature of Canadian political life to hide their SHEER incompetence. I do believe them, that there's no way they'd do something THIS fucking daft on purpose - even if they SHOULD have realized it immediately.

Memorials in Canada to Nazis and Nazi collaborators
Canada has several monuments and memorials that to varying degrees commemorate people and groups accused of collaboration with Nazi forces. Monuments and memorials include or have included a statue of Draža Mihailović in Ontario, three monuments in Ontario and Alberta connected with the Waffen-SS, streets and parks named after Alexis Carrel and Philipp Lenard, a mountain named after Philippe Pétain, and two streets named after a commander of Nazi German forces and his ship. There are two monuments to members of the 14th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS (1st Galician). These monuments are controversial, with leaders of the Canadian Ukrainian community rejecting the links to the Nazi regime. French Mount Pétain A mountain on the border of British Columbia and Alberta was named for Nazi Collaborator Philippe Pétain until British Columbia removed its name in 2022 following Alberta's decision to remove the mountain's name in 2019. It was named for Pétain in 1919, at which point he was considered a hero for leading forces to victory in the 1916 Battle of Verdun...

@threetails yeah I know. Trust me; some of those aren't that far away from where I am. I've had some significant thoughts about that.

This is part of what I was saying about Canadian "anti-communism" being intertwined with extremely reactionary parts of the diaspora. See also China.

Canadian immigration policy prioritizes those with money and education, so we scoop up a lot of other countries' petite bourgeoisie. This class is typically fertile ground for fascist organizing around the world, so those politics end up overrepresented. Similar in a lot of ways to the anticommunism of the Cuban diaspora in Florida. That said, some of our immigrant communities are also the most dynamic labour organizers we have.

@CedarTea Right, for sure and to be clear right, this is the difficulty in talking about it?

Because flat out, I support Canada's safe harbor policies, I wish America would adopt them, and I wish both countries would go much much much further to welcome and support refugees of wars the Pig Empire starts, economic colonialism the Pig Empire engages, and climate catastrophe cause by Pig Empire capitalism.

It's that fascists, USE this, to make fucking Bandarites into heroes. For example.

@CedarTea I think the closest comparison, for America, is actually Vietnam.

The VAST majority of Vietnamese migrants who came to the US, were literally refugees who had EVERY right to say "you destroyed my home and life, now I want a chance to make a new one here."

A very SMALL percentage of the Vietnamese ppl who came here - were ex-fascist thugs who worked with the US occupation and puppet dictators we propped up to support our war.

But the former, was used to defend the later, dishonestly.

Absolutely. It means a lot of careful rhetorical maneuvering since we don't want to set off the wave of anti-immigrant violence that the right seems all too willing to stoke. Caring means nuance, and nuance is frustrating.
