@thomasfuchs The AVP may be different from other VR headsets in that Apple is targeting more than just gaming. Think 3D game-side sports viewing, concerts with perfect sound and views, intimate 3D memories/videos, amazing movie watching, etc. Let’s give it a chance before poo-pooing…

T045T (t045t@scl.zmb.cm)'s status on Monday, 25-Sep-2023 01:35:59 JST T045T @thomasfuchs IIRC, the devices in Snow Crash are tabletop laser-into-retina projectors.
I don’t think that *is* feasible, because the head tracking would need to violate the laws of causality for that to truly work without nauseating you.Maybe very light, glasses-mounted laser projectors could work, but even that’s a stretch.

Paul Carpenter 👾 (xmetal@mastodon.world)'s status on Monday, 25-Sep-2023 01:38:24 JST Paul Carpenter 👾 @thomasfuchs I am a “bleeding edge with razor blades” style early adopter, and even I won’t do the VR thing until the hardware is at least like a normal pair of glasses. I’ve tried most of the iterations available and they are all nightmarish experiences for anything more than a short period of gaming. Sure, the tech needs to start somewhere but I’d agree that we are not even remotely close to having mainstream adoption. Maybe, MAYBE 10 years but I doubt it.

Mikael Lundin 🍀🥦♻️ (mikaellundin@mastodon.social)'s status on Monday, 25-Sep-2023 03:06:37 JST Mikael Lundin 🍀🥦♻️ @thomasfuchs I would like to try it. If it allows me to have several virtual screens from my mac hanging in air where I can move them around, resize them and open new screens as I need them, that would be a killer feature for me.
I have three physical screens for my mac and screen estate is always scarce.

GuyWithLag (guywithlag@mastodon.world)'s status on Monday, 25-Sep-2023 03:23:04 JST GuyWithLag @T045T @thomasfuchs It _is_ feasible, just very very pricey. Just have a look at the LASIK and other laser-into-eyeball apparatuses, they have that part covered - at exorbitant cost. But they're also sending a monochromatic laser point.

Shiny Quagsire (shinyquagsire@mastodon.social)'s status on Monday, 25-Sep-2023 05:31:06 JST Shiny Quagsire @thomasfuchs nah I'm mostly just joking bc this is just a really common statement (nobody will use VR until it's thinner, nobody will use AR until it's contact lenses, etc etc) so it's funny to see nothing worn as the bar.
I honestly have no idea how anyone will make XR fashionable, and every form factor has weird compromises atm

Metafrastis (dgavin@mastodon.online)'s status on Monday, 25-Sep-2023 06:29:37 JST Metafrastis @thomasfuchs As someone who has been wearing glasses for 40 years, let me tell you that if life with glasses is better than life without them, you will wear them. Apples job is only to make the Vision Pro attractive enough that you won‘t want to live (or at least work) without. And a bit smaller of course, but that will happen anyway.

RoxanneG (roxanneg@mastodon.design)'s status on Tuesday, 26-Sep-2023 01:28:56 JST RoxanneG @xmetal @thomasfuchs I agree. When the VR / AR is like a regular pair of sunglasses I think it will be adopted.

Paul Carpenter 👾 (xmetal@mastodon.world)'s status on Tuesday, 26-Sep-2023 03:09:02 JST Paul Carpenter 👾 @thomasfuchs @RoxanneG For sure, but AR is the more likely implementation of this general tech I'd say. Fully-shut-out-the-world-VR will always be a small niche because it's jarring, uncomfortable and anti-social by design. A pair of regular glasses with in-context support of the real world is most likely a lot more compelling and I think that's why we see the baby-steps from Apple in which they are aiming toward AR.

Paul Carpenter 👾 (xmetal@mastodon.world)'s status on Tuesday, 26-Sep-2023 08:06:46 JST Paul Carpenter 👾 @RoxanneG @thomasfuchs Yes, regular sized glasses for AR is the way to go. While the Vision Pro is definitely a VR-style piece of hardware, almost all their use cases and marketing is based more around AR, “seamlessly blends digital content with your physical space” so they definitely have a hybrid going on.

RoxanneG (roxanneg@mastodon.design)'s status on Tuesday, 26-Sep-2023 08:06:48 JST RoxanneG @thomasfuchs @xmetal yes thank you. I understand about the light penetration. I should have said as close to sunglasses as possible for VR / AR ie no heavy goggles. And yes I’d rather have AR with sunglasses than immersive VR any day. Frankly I just want a HUD that lets me know people’s names. I’m terrible at remembering names.
