     My mom's initial hospital bill was six figures USD.

     Not kidding or exaggerating.

     Waiting for Medicare and her university healthcare to knock it down to hopefully only four figures.

     This country is fundamentally broken.

     That's sad. ☹️ We're better off here 🇵🇭, I think. I wonder if Europeans have it better. I'm guessing they do.

     With my #HMO, if I didn't get it thru a company, I could get it prepaid* for 5k pesos, valid for a year. For seniors, it's 13k pesos. Still a good deal, me thinks. It may seem a lot but it's definitely better than paying for consultations and diagnostics out of your own pocket. 🤷♀️

     How about HMO? Can you guys get your own -- independent of your employer?

     I had always paid for my medical bills out of my own pocket. This is my second year having an #HMO (through a company) and it's a HUGE help. 🤯 Saved me a lot of money already. And they have individual prepaid* options. I wish I'd known/understood it before. I could've saved so much all those years... 🤦♀️ #Philippines #Maxicare #healthcare #health

     @evelyn @RL_Dane @lopta We have subsidized health insurance basically. but its no help if you make more than 20000/yr not to mention the insurance costs AND the medical costs just adjusted so they make all the money and it still cost the patients an arm and a leg (sometimes literally.) Basically you tell the govt how much you make and they give you a percentage discount on plans that are $$$+/mo. but insurance that used to cost $150/month now costs $250/mo but the govt pays $100. Its screwed.

     @RL_Dane I had a doctor tell me years ago not to worry about them. This one passed after a few minutes and I'm short of breath but comfortable enough to sit and read.

     It's pretty common to get muscular chest pain. It feels like a sudden jab, and then it goes away

     Heck no, my sister.

     We live in a high-functioning failed state where a single bout of a serious illness can literally bankrupt a moderately wealthy person. Even with insurance.

     We're the second-poorest English-speaking nation, in terms of standard of living.
     There's always South Africa. 😥

     I'm with an HMO now.

     The reason more people in the U.S. don't pay out of pocket is that all of the prices are insanely inflated so that the hospitals and doctors offices can give insurance companies the illusion of saving tons of money.

     If a procedure costs x, they'll bill 10x, and actually receive 2x from insurance. (Not real numbers)
