The original intent of the Framers, I've read, was that there would be separate but equal branches of government, and they would specialize their separate crafts and protect their purview from the other branches.
That all goes away when you have people in all realms conspiring to their party with no regard for the strength of their institution. Now you get parties that align with each other across all branches to achieve things, often to the detriment of their own validity. (I'm thinking of how elected officials like to let the courts decide everything to stay out of contentious fights, for example)
