There are good reasons why the Fediverse is on so many servers:

-It prevents Musk (or anyone!) from buying the network

-If a server is badly run, you can move to another without losing your followers

-Far more human admins on the Fediverse, moderation tends to be better

-If one server goes down, the others still work

-Each server makes its own rules

-Anyone can set up a server

-Lots of server types to choose from, and they connect to each other

@feditips I constantly worry that white men will take over again and become tyrants. Tech doesn't have much ethics and the empathy is non existant. Even if we could all agree that those things don't matter and regulate ourselves based on common goals, white men always harass us to death.

@gentrifiedrose @feditips White men have already taken over most of the servers. Just look at how many minorities are admins and mods vs how many white men are.

Minorities get chased off larger servers because of it. Moderation is no better in the fediverse than it was on Twitter. Not for minorities, anyways. We’re subjected to more abuse in many ways, thanks to decentralised servers and cowboy-style moderation.

p.s. There's a short animation video by @Framasoft called "What is the Fediverse?"

      https://fedi.video/w/9dRFC6Ya11NCVeYKn8ZhiD

TL:DW - The Fediverse allows people on independent social networks to follow and interact with each other without having to get an account on each service. This already happens on email networks and phone networks, why not social networks too?

Most of the time most followers should transfer over, even if it takes a while (sometimes up to a week).

Some followers may not transfer if your new server is blocked by their server, or vice versa.

Some followers may not transfer if their server is no longer working properly (they might have followed you a long time ago when it was working).

@feditips Except I see the cry for help of people who have moved and lost their followers, on a weekly base.

And I'm still not convinced (because of lack of knowledge on my part, I guess?) that a collective of right wing servers can be stopped.

"And I'm still not convinced (because of lack of knowledge on my part, I guess?) that a collective of right wing servers can be stopped."

A few years ago a far right server called Gab tried to enter the mainstream Fediverse, but so many existing servers blocked them that they gave up and didn't bother federating any more.

One app @Tusky even added code so that anyone trying to use Tusky with a Gab account just got rickrolled :rickroll:

      @HeyLaiverd

Yeah, was one of the best moments of the Fediverse! Well done @Tusky 👏

But, yeah, the point you raise is valid in that there's nothing to stop anyone creating their own server. It works a bit like the world wide web, anyone can make a website.

It's up to each server's management to decide what it blocks and what it federates with.

@feditips @Framasoft I’m still learning how this all works and every little bit of info helps me learn. Thanks. One question: if this is the case then why can’t I see posts by, or even search successfully for people on other instances? I have friends on mastodon.social but since I’m on mstdn.social I can’t see them. Someone shared info on how to do that but I didn’t understand it. Can you help clarify? Thanks!

      @gmcq

You can see posts by people on other instances and search for them, but if the account is really new or if it hasn't posted much then it may not be very visible to other servers.

If you follow someone, then they immediately become visible to everyone on your server, and you will see all their posts from that moment onwards.

If you can't find someone by searching, you can use their "account address" to make their account appear: https://fedi.tips/whats-my-accounts-address-how-do-i-follow-other-peoples-addresses-how-can-people-follow-my-address/

I know this seems unnecessarily complicated, but there are good reasons why servers work like this.

Every server is totally independent, to prevent anyone taking over the network.

It would be incredibly expensive to have a record of every post by every person on all other servers, duplicated thousands of times over on every other server.

So, as a compromise, servers only list accounts and posts that they have "noticed". Here's more info about this: https://fedi.tips/which-posts-and-accounts-can-i-see-from-my-server/

@feditips Thank you for explaining this further! This would account for why I couldn’t find someone recently: their account was brand new and only had maybe one post. But a search didn’t show them even after they started following me, which had me baffled. I’m slow to catch on but I absolutely love how this works compared to centralized social media. Thank you!!!

Yup, that's why it's a good idea to use a server listed on https://fedi.garden or https://joinmastodon.org/servers, as they have all promised to give three months warning if they are going to shut down.

The larger unfiltered lists don't ask for any commitments at all.

Both servers must be live for the move to work, if your old host suddenly shuts down, you can't use this to recover.

That's unfortunately true of anything on the internet. Unless you physically have server hardware in your own home, you are always relying on a third party to maintain their service.

Even the largest, best-funded companies regularly have severe technical problems and mass deletions without warning:
