    :bc: Attention Beige Party-goers! :bc:

    In the past month there have been two incidents that I'm aware of where the web server was hanging and the site was unresponsive for several minutes. One of those seemed to resolve on its own eventually; the other I happened to notice as it was occurring and resolved once I gave the web server a hard reboot. It's possible that this has happened more than twice and I just haven't noticed it.

    Looking at the logs I'm not seeing anything specifically failing, so I think what's happening is that occasionally traffic spikes are overwhelming the system resources. If left alone, the server can eventually recover but it will remain unresponsive until it does.

    We have grown a lot in the last two years so this isn't totally surprising. I have scaled up the web server from time to time in order to account for the processing demands of increased traffic, but I'm reaching the limits of what I can do with a single server.

    So, what I'm planning to do is spin up an additional web server and put them both behind a load balancer. This has a few advantages. If one server is overtaxed then traffic can be shifted to the other. It also means that for simple server updates (ones that don't involve database schema changes), I can take one down to run the update while the other stays up. In other words, in most cases I won't have to take the entire site down to do server maintenance.

    This all sounds great, but as usual I have no idea what I'm doing. So I'm going to move slowly to set things up in the background and make sure I'm 100% certain everything is going to work before I push it live. Until I have this new solution in place it's possible things could be a little bumpy. So far the server hanging has been an intermittent issue, which is why I want to take care of it now, before it becomes a bigger problem.

    As always, thank you for bearing with me!

    @chris OK, so your basic argument is that federating with a server has nothing to do with moderating your own server.

    So am I correct that the servers you run do not block any other servers. That they federate with all servers? (That they haven’t defederated any servers?)

    Including ones that are known to host child sexual abuse material?

    (After all, by your argument, there is child sexual abuse material on the web and there always has been.)

    If not (and I sure as hell hope not and that you do at least implement the basic block lists), then you’re saying that you do have a line. But that Threads does not cross your line by allowing people to call LGBTQ+ folks “mentally ill” and women “property”.

    And that, there, is the problem.

    I seem to be having better results with my rolling distro than I had with fixed.
    ... except for my server.

    So the answer is, it depends on my use case.
    The computer I keep on my workbench that goes long periods of time without use was also reverted back to a fixed release distro. Rolling kept getting too far out of date and then having issues updating.

    The may important thing to understand about Madison is that it is "open by default". The way most instances are set up, there is nothing preventing outside parties from pulling all of the content out of your server.

    So the first thing to do is find out what settings your server instance has. I think that means finding out who your server admin is and asking them for clarity.

    @wild1145

    Just to be clear (I posted the charts) the point where user count started to plummit seems oddly in line with the date listed on your profile as the date you joined the server.

    So just to be clear, all the data aligns, not to mention the ton of people coming forward (you cant see the thread cause you have them all blocked) calling you out and showing your bad-moderating practices and abuse.

    The evidence speaks for itself.

    @beforewisdom

    Do you mean the Webfinger plugin?

    I'm not completely sure on how necessary it is, I am not a developer. Sorry 😞

    Accounts only show up on Mastodon searches if someone on that server is following them, or if they have been interacted with by someone on your server.

    So, if you want to get your blog noticed in searches it's a good idea to tell people on Mastodon etc its address and encourage them to follow the blog.
