MondoBizarrroIm typically not fond of compilation albums. Dont get me wrong greatest hits albums will *always* have their niche, its just not my thing. There is however one exception i make with compilation albums and that is a compilation of singles like ministry's: "12 inch singles* compilation or a compilation of a bunch of early eps into a lp like big black's "the hammer party" being the lungs ep on one side and the bulldozer ep on the other, another example would be social distortion's mainliner compilation of a bunch of their very early eps/singles. I prefer lps over singles if it wasnt obvious so i get the best of both worlds with that. What do yall think?
@Mondobizarrro i don't get the point of compilation albuns on digital media tbh on physical media i get it, you might want to buy an album from your fav band with all their best songs to listen to, but in digital like... make a playlist
@sun_eater i typically agree. But often times they will cross release a "greatest hits" album on digital for like convenience ig. Again i do make exceptions for stuff like mainliner and the hammer party on youtube because they are more accessible but you arent wrong.
@Mondobizarrro maybe greatest hits are good in case you want to discover a new band and wanna start with the best songs but it still is kind pointless when u can just go after a playlist
@Mondobizarrro the big exception is compilations of bands that had a cult following but never took off, where they just combine all their demos and such into one record.
@rowb1t i mean i said my exceptions were for like early singles and or turning like a couple eps into a whole album, this is p similar. Best of compilations will always be a thing and work as a sampler or for people who want a "oops all hits" album that is guarenteed bangers. Its just that i prefer normal albums over compilations (unless they are like what i said) typically.
@kittenlikeasmallcat i agree. I said best ofs will always be a thing cause its a good sampler and or there for people who just want all the hits. I just prefer albums over compilations unless they are like a collection of early singles/demos/eps (like the 12" singles by ministry again), or like a couple eps stitched together to make an album (like the hammer party)
Social distortion's mainliner compilation kinda fits under both examples i gave since its early singles and eps assorted in a collection. Though i think they are segmented out so that the eps are in the same layout as they originally were (or atleast by the era they came out)
@Mondobizarrro what i love is how those comps tend to eventually be canonized as "albums." it's the go-to point for people getting into a band, but the consistency in songwriting, performing, and recording is all over the place across the run-length.
