   No matter if it's a conscious stereotype or not - there are several studies that show how NTs react to autistic people. In general, they tend to dislike and distrust us. It's not only the lack of eye contact, but many nuanced visual cues that they interpret immediately.

     @Sci_Fi_FanGirl @robrecht @theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic And then there's masking, which must be awfully confusing to NTs and can be (mis)interpreted as lying.

     I'll be the first to admit of countless times I outright lied about obligations I didn't really have so I could get out of uncomfortable social situations, or coming up with sometimes elaborate excuses to explain why I couldn't do something I was expected to do.

     Now I know better, but (white) lies were the fabric of my masking.

     @PatternChaser @Sci_Fi_FanGirl @robrecht @theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic I think of it as a coping mechanism, so I'm not as inclined to use such harsh words. But again, I can see why NTs jump to conclusions so easily

     Sadly, it isn't a "(mis)interpretation" — #masking is speaking like an NT, which involves dishonesty at all levels. It *is* lying, a lot of the time.
