@poshelnahuymedia@kolektiva.social Honestly, pay never really was a reason for me to switch jobs either. Its more important to have fun colleagues and interesting work, with good hours. Having good parties from time to time on the company's bill is also a good thing to have for teambuilding, much more effective than any dumb HR teambuilding game they can dream up with.
Money isn't everything, most employees know this too. If you think a job is literally only ever a thing about money and nothing more, I feel very sad for you.

why give everyone a raise when they'll be just as happy to have a pool table in the breakroom, which costs a fraction of the cost? -

They don't make boot straps like they used to (they're chinesium and they fall apart when you try) and the overall economic mobility is lower than it was even 15 years ago when I thought it was awful. That doesn't even touch on the social issues plaguing young people. -

tyil (tyil@fedi.tyil.nl)'s status on Tuesday, 15-Aug-2023 02:36:28 JST tyil @BowsacNoodle@poa.st I've heard tales of the USA and its system is indeed atrocious. Decades of corruption at the top left the current generation in a pit. And still, at this very moment, there seems no movement to get rid of the corruption and make life better for the average person. This is why I consider it a shithole that you should move out of, or fight to improve. Those are your choices, especially if you want to leave it in a better shape for the generation that comes after you.
And for what its worth, I've met several USA citizens who moved out. Some even had the overseas company pay for their move, but this does require you to be skilled at something. It's fairly doable in IT for instance, where the bar is ridiculously low for entry, and companies are always on the lookout for actual quality people. If you have nothing to offer an employer, he won't be interested in paying any money for your work.BowserNoodle ☦️ likes this. -

BowserNoodle ☦️ (bowsacnoodle@poa.st)'s status on Tuesday, 15-Aug-2023 03:13:29 JST BowserNoodle ☦️ @tyil I've had this conversation a lot lately with some younger guys I talk with. Showering before vs after work is not as important as being satisfied with your job and having the life outside of work that you want. Work as life is only viable for some people, and most of them don't ever find happiness even if they have better material conditions. There are welders who work half the year (lots of OT) living in fifth-wheel trailers and still earn 100k+. You can certainly be creative and find ways to make good money if you're capable. It sucks that people have to work that hard to have a lifestyle which should otherwise be much more attainable, but that's another issue. -

tyil (tyil@fedi.tyil.nl)'s status on Tuesday, 15-Aug-2023 03:13:31 JST tyil @BowsacNoodle@poa.st It's easy in IT, but certainly not limited to IT. The coziness of a high paying office job is desirable mostly due to the way the media, and how it portrays all kinds of jobs.
A family member of mine works at a shipyard, he makes way more than me for doing that, but at the cost of having a job that doesn't sound fancy when brought up in conversation. He doesn't care about that, he's doing what he loves doing. And because he's doing what he loves, he's more passionate than his colleagues. This is what allows him to have a better performance, which in turn is worth a lot of money in his employer's mind.
I know someone who makes good money in maintaining the sewer systems. There's plenty of jobs around, and especially dirty jobs can fetch a lot of money.
