Caffosaurus☕?:mayo:Oh joy! There are even fewer licensed teachers now than at the end of the school year in June. So they'll be hiring unqualified people (with a degree in a relevant subject but no teaching qualifications) just to have warm bodies in the classroom. I wonder what kind of numpties I'll be sharing the staff room with in a few weeks. (Honestly, as long as they don't bring the TIM back, I can deal with whatever they throw at us)
@FeartnTired@Fullycaffeinated I heard (unconfined rumor) that the closest university to me has empty seats in this year's nursing program. Considering the traditional nursing school attrition rate, this is a very bad sign.
@GrumpyOldNurse@FeartnTired Sure, they tried offering retiring teachers $12 000 not to retire. Problem is, these same teachers could get there pension plus whatever contract they pick up at the top of the salary scale. So only a handful took them up on it. Most retirees would rather just sub and not have to deal with the planning and evaluating. They also get to pick and chose where they go.
Oh, and also fucking around with our contract negotiations. They signed the last one a little over two years ago after it being expires for two years so it's up again. So there is a possibility that we'll be starting the school year with a strike vote.
Why, oh why don't more people want to be teachers????
@Fullycaffeinated the ideal is both subject and child raising/teaching qualified. but of the two.... maybe good with kids, level headed and with an enquiring mind would be better.
@FeartnTired They do also get student-teachers that are close to graduating and make their contract count as part of their practicum hours. But then they need to be supervised, which means someone has to be evaluating them. It's a somewhat better solution, but still not ideal.
Last year there were 30 000 unqualified or not yet qualified teachers across the province. That's about a quarter of the workforce. All these great thinkers trying to figure out why more people don't want to be teachers....
